Boiled onion juice with lemon juice in a video going viral on social media - Photo: DIGITEYE
Recently, users of many social networks shared a video instructing that adding a few drops of lemon to boiled onion water can lower blood sugar thanks to glucokinin, the information is that glucokinin is similar to insulin and this is the secret of pharmaceutical companies.
Through verification, experts from Digiteye, a digital information verification project in India, on July 18 confirmed that this is false information and there is no clear scientific evidence to support the information in the viral video.
Boiled onion water with a few drops of lemon juice can lower blood sugar by up to 300mg/dL, and its use as an emergency medical aid is unverified information.
This information is especially harmful for people with diabetes, who rely on insulin or medication.
Glucokinin is a term that describes a plant-derived compound, distinct from compounds like insulin that are present in both plants and animals.
In 1923, Canadian biochemist J.B. Collip described a plant-derived compound that had insulin-like effects.
Mr Collip isolated glucokinin from onions and confirmed that it had a similar hypoglycemic effect to insulin in rabbits and dogs. However, his report did not assert that glucokinin could replace insulin in any way.
In 2003, a research paper published in the Journal of Plant Physiology (Brazil) confirmed that insulin-like proteins exist in plants, but their exact physiological role remains poorly understood and controversial.
Meanwhile, some reports published by the US healthcare company Peace Health said that onion extract showed the ability to reduce blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients, but there were no individual reports about glucokinin.
Therefore, although studies have shown that glucokinin can lower blood sugar in non-human models, the same cannot be said to be effective in humans.
There has been no clinical or in-depth research on glucokinin alone as mentioned in the video that is spreading on social networks when claiming that this is the secret to helping lower blood sugar.
Finally, no studies have evaluated the safety or efficacy of glucokinin in humans in emergency or hyperglycemic situations.
