Returning to the countryside to be a farmer, raising "special" fish in a tank
Among the 19 agricultural extension models implemented in 2023 in Hoai Nhon Town (Binh Dinh), many models were unexpectedly successful, especially the mud-free eel farming model.
After returning from working in Japan, Mr. Hoang Xuan Truc (born in 1990) in Thien Duc quarter, Hoai Huong ward (Hoai Nhon town) continued to work in many different jobs in the provinces and cities in the South, but none of the jobs provided him with a stable income.
In early 2021, Mr. Truc returned to his hometown and decided to start a business with a mud-free eel farming model. To prepare for the startup idea, he had previously visited many mud-free eel farming models in localities inside and outside the province to thoroughly learn the farming techniques.
Selected by the Agricultural Service Center of Hoai Nhon town to support the construction of a mud-free eel farming model with a scale of 30m2 with 5 cement tanks, each tank is about 6m2 wide, Mr. Truc ordered 9,000 eel fry from eel farms in the South to raise. Thanks to scientific care and proper procedures, he had an advantage right from the first step of raising the fry.
Mr. Hoang Xuan Truc said that for eels to grow well and have few diseases, the farm must ensure cool conditions in the summer and must be covered to keep the farm warm in the winter.
"Eels are quite sensitive to the water environment, so the water source for raising eels must be changed every two days. The water must be carefully filtered, impurities removed, and antibiotics used to prevent diseases in eels," said Mr. Truc.

With a smooth start, in mid-2021, Mr. Truc expanded the eel farming model to 10 tanks, each tank holding 2,000 fry. Thanks to choosing a consistent, high-quality source of fry, after 11 months of farming, the eels reached an average weight of 250 - 300g/fish, the survival rate reached 85%, and the output reached 1.5 tons. With wholesale prices ranging from 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, Mr. Truc earned a profit of over 120 million VND.
In addition, in the coming time, this farmer will continue to expand the eel farming model, combining grass planting and cow raising to create a closed farming model to reduce costs and increase output value.
Mr. Su Van Hung - technical officer of Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center assessed that in 2023, Mr. Hoang Xuan Truc's eel farming model in cement tanks continued to achieve unexpected success. Eels grew well, survival rate reached 90%, average weight reached 9 - 10 eels/kg, output reached about 900kg/crop (6 months).

Working side by side with farmers to do business
From the practice and economic efficiency of pilot agricultural extension models in the area in 2023, up to now, 10 farming households in Hoai Nhon town, Binh Dinh province have approached, learned and invested in replicating models such as raising black apple snails, beaded snakehead fish and especially the mud-free eel farming model is increasingly being replicated.
Households participating in the models are interested in creating conditions and supporting farming techniques by the Agricultural Service Center of Hoai Nhon Town.
From the funding source for agricultural extension activities of the province and town, in 2023, Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center has deployed the construction of many agricultural extension models, suitable for production needs in localities, contributing to the transfer of scientific and technical applications in production, diversifying crops and livestock, improving production efficiency, and increasing income for people.
According to Director of Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center Ngo Dinh Tuy, in the past year, Hoai Nhon Town Agricultural Service Center has proactively coordinated with localities to build 19 agricultural extension models.

Of which, there are 3 provincial-level agricultural extension models, including: Improved rice intensive farming model towards quality and organic with a scale of 5 hectares in Xuan Vinh village (Hoai My commune); Integrated pest management model IPM on corn against fall armyworm, area of 1 hectare in Trung Hoa quarter (Tam Quan Nam ward); sesame intensive farming model with a scale of 2 hectares on converted rice land in Thai Lai quarter (Hoai Xuan ward) and 16 livestock and crop models of local agricultural extension.

"It is encouraging that the town's five livestock and crop extension models implemented in early 2023 have all yielded unexpected results. Notable examples include: the new vegetable production model of yellow cauliflower, free-range chicken farming, black apple snail farming in earthen ponds... The most successful models are the model of raising snakehead fish and eel farming in cement tanks," said Mr. Ngo Dinh Tuy.
According to the Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Hoai Nhon Town, during the implementation of the model, the staff of the Agricultural Service Center of Hoai Nhon Town regularly transferred techniques to participating farmers, guided the process of farming, care, and disease prevention in many forms directly or by phone, Zalo to help households feel secure in production.
