(Dan Tri) - Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to support the administration of US President Donald Trump in negotiating with Iran on important issues, including the nuclear program.

In a February phone call with his counterpart Putin, President Trump directly conveyed his concerns about Iran's nuclear program and its support for anti-American forces in the Middle East.

A few days later, senior US officials discussed the issue with Russia during talks in Saudi Arabia, according to sources in Moscow. However, neither Russia nor Iran has publicly confirmed or denied the request.

In an interview with Bloomberg news agency, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Russia believes that the US and Iran should resolve all issues through negotiations and Moscow is ready to do everything in its power to help both sides achieve this."

Asked if Russia had offered to mediate between Tehran and Washington, an Iranian Foreign Ministry representative said it was "normal" for countries to offer assistance.

Trump has sent mixed signals regarding Iran since his re-election as US President. He has announced his intention to return to the "maximum pressure" policy of his first term, including restoring sanctions and targeting Tehran's security forces. However, he also wants to start negotiating a nuclear peace deal with Iran soon.

As two countries subject to strict US sanctions, Russia and Iran have increased cooperation in the fields of trade, energy and security, including Russia's alleged use of a large number of Iranian drones in its war with Ukraine.

However, it remains unclear how Tehran would decide on any US proposal through Russia.

Many hardliners in key Iranian institutions, such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have publicly opposed cooperation with Washington.

Last month, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared that Mr. Trump was “untrustworthy” because he withdrew from the Obama-era nuclear deal in his first term.

In late February, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi ruled out the possibility of direct negotiations with the United States regarding the country's nuclear program.

Previously, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that under President Trump's term, Iran will not possess nuclear weapons.
