On October 14, Beijing deployed fighter jets, drones, warships and coast guard vessels to surround Taiwan, in what was China’s fourth large-scale military exercise around Taiwan in just the past two years.
The drills come after Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te's recent remarks opposing any "annexation or invasion" and saying Beijing had no right to represent the island's 23 million people.
“The exercises demonstrate to the Chinese people that the Chinese government is determined to defend its territory. They are also intended to warn Taipei and Washington not to cross Beijing’s red lines,” said Bonnie Glaser, managing director of the Indo- Pacific program at the German Marshall Fund.
Taiwan's defense ministry strongly condemned China's "irrational and provocative actions" and said it had "dispatched appropriate forces to respond to protect the island's freedom, democracy and sovereignty ."
Meanwhile, Beijing stressed that it did not rule out the use of force to unify Taiwan and said the drills were a warning against "separatist actions by Taiwan independence forces".
