Trump vows to end Ukraine war

The meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan was the first time the two men had met face to face since 2019.

Mr Zelenskyy said he had spoken to both Mr Trump and his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, because Ukraine needed strong US support in its ongoing battle with Russia.

Mr Trump praised Mr Zelenskyy, but also said he had a good relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We have a very good relationship (with Zelenskyy), and as you know, I have a very good relationship with President Putin,” former President Trump told reporters. “If I win, I think we will solve this problem very quickly.”

Mr Zelenskyy used his visit to the US to present his “victory plan”, which one US official described as a request for more weapons and the lifting of restrictions on the use of long-range missiles.

During his time in the US, Mr Zelenskyy visited an ammunition factory in Pennsylvania with Governor Josh Shapiro, an ally of Ms Kamala Harris.

The visit has angered Mr Trump's campaign and some Republican lawmakers, particularly because Pennsylvania is a key battleground state in the upcoming presidential election.

Earlier on September 26, people close to Mr. Trump and his campaign said the possibility of a meeting with Mr. Zelenskyy was very low, but Mr. Trump changed his mind while Mr. Zelenskyy was in the United States.

The differences between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris on Ukraine reflect the divisions within the Democratic and Republican parties themselves. While Mr. Trump and some Republicans have questioned the value of providing weapons and financial assistance to Ukraine, Democrats, led by President Biden, have been determined to punish Russia and support Ukraine, viewing Ukraine’s victory as a vital national security interest.
