According to the Japan Times , the information was announced by Japanese police and media on September 27. This is the latest incident in a series of disrespectful acts by some foreign tourists in Japan, with the aim of attracting attention on social networks.
Specifically, the incident occurred in Okuma town - an area that was a radiation hotspot after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, and is still on the list of prohibited areas due to high levels of radiation.
According to Fukushima prefectural police, in addition to a YouTuber, two men of Ukrainian nationality were also arrested for illegally entering an abandoned house in a restricted area.
"A resident reported and helped the authorities detect and arrest the suspects at the scene," said a police representative.
All three admitted to the crime, according to TV Asahi. Video streamed live on YouTube by the group showed them making tea and rummaging through items left behind in the uninhabited house.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Japan, Sergiy Korsunsky, has apologized for the incident, writing on the social media platform X: “This should not have happened.”
According to the Japan Times , after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, about 12% of Fukushima Prefecture was sealed off due to the risk of radiation exposure. Nearly 165,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes, many of whom have never returned.
While most areas have now been deemed safe, some areas - including where the tourists filmed the video - are still considered dangerous because of unstable radiation levels.
Japan is currently welcoming a record number of tourists , but is also facing a wave of criticism from locals over the lack of awareness and disregard for the law by some foreign tourists.
