After Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, Mr. Biden emphasized that the agreement was based on the framework he had provided, while Mr. Trump said it was thanks to the influence of his election, as well as a special envoy of his who participated in the negotiations.

President Biden (right) and President-elect Trump both said they contributed to reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

US President Joe Biden and his successor Donald Trump both took credit for Israel and Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on January 15, after the White House sent Trump's special envoy to the Middle East for months of negotiations.

Mr Trump quickly asserted himself as the driving force behind the deal, while Mr Biden insisted that the deal was reached under the “precise framework” of a plan he laid out in late May.

What's in the Israel-Hamas deal on ceasefire, hostage release?

According to Mr. Trump, the above ceasefire agreement could only happen thanks to his historic victory in the US presidential election in November 2023.

"It signals to the world that my administration will seek peace and negotiate agreements that ensure the safety of all Americans and our allies. I am pleased that the American and Israeli hostages will be returned home to be reunited with their families and loved ones," he wrote on social media.

The president-elect added that his pick for Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who participated in the Qatar talks, would continue to "work closely with Israel and our allies to ensure Gaza never again becomes a terrorist safe haven."

Meanwhile, from the White House, President Biden said that "my diplomacy has never stopped working to achieve this."

“This is not only the result of the enormous pressure on Hamas and the change in the regional balance, following the ceasefire in Lebanon and the weakening of Iran, but also the result of persistent and meticulous US diplomacy,” he said.

President Biden said his administration had negotiated the deal but that Mr Trump's team would soon be tasked with ensuring it was implemented. "Over the last few days, we've been talking as a team," he said.

However, Mr. Trump's team objected, saying President Biden could not have made the deal until Mr. Trump and Mr. Witkoff intervened.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the Biden administration is handing the Trump team a detailed roadmap for lasting peace with broad regional support.

Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his gratitude to both the incoming and outgoing US Presidents.
