Developing value chain in lotus production, processing and consumption

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - On July 12, the Provincial Agricultural Institute organized a scientific workshop with the theme "Introducing and replicating the model of seed production, commercial cultivation of lotus for flowers, seeds and processing at the Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute".

The workshop belongs to the Project of Applying science and technology to build a value chain linkage model in the production, processing and consumption of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) in Thanh Hoa province.

At the workshop, delegates focused on assessing the current situation, orientation, and solutions for lotus development in the whole province; experience in exploiting the economic value of lotus plants associated with the tourism culture of a model; promoting the development of lotus products and exchanging experiences in producing lotus products of growers, researchers, and processing enterprises to strengthen production and consumption linkages, and promote product trade.

According to statistics, Thanh Hoa province has more than 300 hectares of lotus of all kinds. Lotus is a multi-value crop, which can be harvested for flowers, seeds, tubers, and stems that can be used as textile fibers... However, currently in the province there are very few lotus production models following the value chain from planting, processing to consumption.

Therefore, organizing this scientific workshop with the participation of researchers, people and businesses aims to select the most promising lotus varieties for commodity production, creating a closed chain from planting, care to processing and consumption.
