In 2019, when a banana taped to a wall with tape was sold for $120,000 (about 3 billion VND), the media sparked a fierce debate regarding the meaning of art.

In the near future, Sotheby's will continue to auction another version of this conceptual artwork called Comedian, which is estimated to reach 1-1.5 million USD. This is one of three versions of the "banana" that caused a stir 5 years ago when it was sold for an exorbitant price.

The winning bidder will receive a banana, a roll of tape, and instructions on how to arrange the artist's work.

Comedian is a conceptual artwork and the materials used will change each time the artist makes an installation.

Cattelan and the Perrotin gallery in Paris, France, attracted global attention five years ago when they exhibited Comedian , a work with a six-figure asking price, at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The original work used a banana purchased from a Miami fruit store. The line-up at the time made it extremely popular.

Even performance artist David Datuna shocked the audience when he removed a banana from the tape on the wall and ate it in front of hundreds of visitors at the fair. The artist later said that it was a genuine performance art and not an act of vandalism.

The installation was later dismantled for security reasons, but three versions of the taped bananas found their owners. Two were purchased by private collectors for $120,000, while the other was sold to an anonymous buyer who later donated it to The Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Sotheby's has not revealed the identity of the Comedian's seller in November but said its owner acquired the work from one of its original owners.
