Here, nutritionists point out who needs to be careful when eating bananas and how much healthy people should eat.
Who should be careful when eating bananas?
Nutritionist Alexandra Rosenstock, from Weill Cornell Medicine College and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (USA), explains:
People with kidney disease. Bananas are high in potassium, with one banana containing about 400 mg of potassium, which can be harmful to people with kidney problems because the kidneys may not be able to remove excess potassium from the body, potentially leading to hyperkalemia. This condition can cause serious, even life-threatening symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, or paralysis, according to Verywell Health.

Diabetics. Bananas are high in natural sugars and carbohydrates, which raise blood sugar more quickly than protein and fat. Some people with diabetes should limit or avoid bananas to prevent blood sugar spikes. So, for diabetics, the key is to eat smaller portions – about half a banana a day.
Additionally, choose unripe or slightly ripe bananas because they contain a lot of resistant starch and fiber, which helps improve insulin sensitivity and has less impact on blood sugar levels.
Also pair bananas with protein or fat, like nuts or unsweetened yogurt, to reduce the sugar spike.
People with irritable bowel syndrome. According to nutritionist Samantha Dieras, from the Mount Sinai Hospital System (USA), eating too many bananas can cause bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea.
Bananas are high in fiber and contain fermentable carbohydrates that can cause indigestion in people with irritable bowel syndrome or who need to limit their fiber intake.
People with migraines. Some people are sensitive to tyramine, a compound found in bananas, and may experience headaches or migraines. Limit your intake to half a banana per day.
How many bananas should a healthy person eat per day?
Bananas are good for digestion, blood pressure and energy. However, like most foods, experts warn: Even though bananas are a good food, they should be eaten in moderation.
Rosenstock recommends: Healthy people without kidney problems can safely eat 2-3 bananas a day, according to Verywell Health.
People with underlying medical conditions should consult their doctor before increasing the amount of bananas in their diet.
