Location of the epicenter of the 4.9 magnitude earthquake, level 1 natural disaster risk

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences , Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) continuously broadcasts information about earthquakes.

Of which, on October 5, 10 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.3 occurred in Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province. Natural disaster risk level 0.

On October 6, as of noon, 15 consecutive earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 4.9, occurred in Mang But and Mang Ri communes in Quang Ngai.

The largest earthquake occurred at 1:28:42 on October 6, in Mang Ri commune, Quang Ngai province, with a magnitude of 4.9, at the coordinates of 14.871 degrees North latitude, 108.130 degrees East longitude, with a focal depth of about 8.1 km. Disaster risk level 1.

On social networks, many people in Gia Lai, Da Nang , Hue... said they also felt strong tremors from this 4.9 magnitude earthquake.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Deputy Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that the above earthquakes were all stimulated earthquakes.

Induced earthquakes occur cyclically, closely related to the water storage activities of reservoirs. There are periods of weak earthquake activity, and periods of frequent earthquakes.

Before and after an earthquake of magnitude 4 or greater, there are often foreshocks and aftershocks, which are small earthquakes. The larger the earthquake, the more foreshocks and aftershocks.

From 2021 to present, the Kon Plong district area, Kon Tum province (old) now Quang Nam province has frequently experienced stimulated earthquakes, of which there were over 20 in a day, many of which caused felt tremors. The strongest earthquake in this area occurred at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0.

The earthquake stimulus in this area is expected to last for many years, maybe 10 years before stabilizing, but it is unlikely to be greater than 5.5 magnitude.
