On the afternoon of October 3, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to organize a conference to connect OCOP products (One Commune One Product) in the Mekong Delta region with trade systems in 2024.

Need to pay attention to packaging design and price of OCOP products

According to Mr. Ngo Truong Son - Chief of the Central Office for New Rural Area Coordination, today's event is of important significance in connection and cooperation in production and promotion of OCOP products of the Mekong Delta region. In 2022, the Mekong Delta region ranked 3rd in the country in terms of the number of OCOP products with a rate of 17%; by 2024, the region ranked 2nd with a rate of 21%. However, local OCOP product owners have not focused adequately on regional characteristics, small production scale, weak production linkages, and limited brand building thinking. Mr. Ta Minh Son - Director of Tu Son supermarket ( An Giang ) - shared that OCOP products are the right step for the locality. However, OCOP products of some businesses and owners have not paid attention to packaging form and have not focused on attaching regional geography (possibly images and colors typical of the province) to the product. "The OCOP entity printing the typical images and colors of its province on the product will create a regional geographical highlight and needs to pay attention to quality, have clear legal documents and especially consider reasonable prices so that consumers can feel secure in choosing to buy," said Mr. Son.

Connecting OCOP products to supermarkets

Mr. Pham Van Nho - Director of Thanh Thanh Dried Shrimp Cooperative in Vinh Thuan District (Kien Giang) - informed that Vinh Thuan currently has an aquaculture area of more than 30,000 hectares, shrimp output of 40,000 tons/year. Giant freshwater prawns have dropped to 70,000 VND/kg at times. Farmers have suffered heavy losses, and output is also difficult. "We are preparing about 50 tons of dried shrimp to supply the upcoming Tet market. We currently need about 40% more product output to be able to both support shrimp farmers and develop local specialty products," Mr. Nho suggested. Mr. Tran Thanh Nam - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that specialty products, OCOP products of the Mekong Delta region have the potential to be exported abroad. Enterprises, OCOP entities, and local cooperatives pay attention to product quality and gather together to form a force, promote collective strength to overcome difficulties and expand domestic and foreign consumption markets. "The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recently traveled to many countries such as the US, China, Japan, etc. to overcome difficulties, expand consumption channels, and export OCOP products and local agricultural products abroad. Localities need to increase consumer awareness of OCOP products in order to develop sustainably, contributing to socio-economic development," Mr. Nam emphasized.
