Is there going to be a surprise about TikTok's fate in the US?

(NLDO) – President Donald Trump suggested that billionaire Elon Musk or Oracle founder Larry Ellison buy TikTok through a joint venture with the US government.

"I have the authority to make a TikTok deal," Bloomberg quoted President Trump as saying at the White House on January 21 (US time). "So what I'm thinking about is telling someone to buy the app and give half to the United States. Then we'll license it to them and they'll have a great partner."

TikTok had to temporarily suspend operations last weekend, but as soon as he returned to the White House, new President Trump immediately signed an executive order extending operations for another 75 days for the Chinese-origin social network.

"Although the legality of Mr. Trump's extension decision is still unclear, this may no longer be important in the current context," Bloomberg commented.

ByteDance (TikTok's parent company) has publicly stated that it is not selling the platform, but potential investors are still hoping that the US Supreme Court ruling and TikTok's short-term suspension may change their minds.

"You own assets that have no value or are worth $1,000 billion, it all depends on whether the US issues a license or not" - President Trump emphasized.

There are several investors who are interested in buying TikTok, including a group led by tech entrepreneur Jesse Tinsley. MrBeast, the internet's most followed and highest-earning content creator, also announced a proposal to buy TikTok early on January 21.

Billionaire Frank McCourt (former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers) and "Shark Tank" investor Kevin O'Leary also submitted formal offers to buy TikTok in early January.

Notably, billionaire Frank McCourt affirmed his willingness to buy TikTok without the content algorithm, something that ByteDance and the Chinese government have said they will not sell.

Two companies that have had business relationships with TikTok, Amazon.com and Oracle, have also been seen as potential buyers.

It was Oracle that helped restore the TikTok app after about 14 hours of outage in the US, after President Trump assured him not to enforce the law.

Billionaire Musk, who has spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Mr. Trump's bid for a second presidential term, is another potential buyer.

Businessman Ellison was also at the White House on January 21 to announce a new artificial intelligence (AI) joint venture with Softbank Group Corp. and OpenAI LLC.

Near the end of the event, President Trump suggested the possibility of downloading TikTok to his phone.

"I think I can install TikTok on my phone right now," President Trump said, admitting that thanks to this platform, he received many votes from young voters in the US presidential election in November 2024.

"I think I've won over young people through TikTok, so I have a special affection for the platform," Trump added.
