Repairs for nearly 5,000 faulty hearts

Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, deputy head of the Cardiology Department at Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC), said the heart surgery program "has been receiving close attention and direction from the hospital's leadership."

The Children's Hospital 2's heart surgery program began in 2010 with simple interventions. Over time, more complex heart defects have been repaired by doctors, helping children return to normal life with a better quality of life.

Doctor Ngoc Phuong said that every year Children's Hospital 2 receives more than 7,000 patients coming for examination regarding cardiovascular problems.

Of which, the number of inpatients in the cardiology department ranges from 2,000 - 3,000 cases per year.

The hospital's cardiac surgery program includes open and closed heart surgery; diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization.

In the past time, doctors at Children's Hospital 2 have performed heart surgery on nearly 2,000 cases and cardiac catheterization on nearly 3,000 cases.

The cardiac surgery program has grown with the establishment of the thoracic cardiothoracic intensive care unit. This is a hospital-wide effort.

Currently, on average, there are 7-10 cases of heart surgery and 10-12 cases of heart catheterization performed at the hospital each week.

Hope more and more faulty hearts are repaired

With the development of diagnostic and intervention techniques, Children's Hospital 2 is also one of the places that implements prenatal diagnosis and counseling very early.

Many pregnant women are screened with ultrasound and given treatment advice if their pregnancy has cardiovascular problems. This program, in collaboration with major maternity hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, aims to help pregnant women with high cardiovascular risks have a safe labor and the fetus will receive the most attentive care possible.

Doctors hope to see more and more faulty hearts repaired and more families supported.
