Heavy damage after storm No. 10, high-tech shrimp farm owner tries to overcome consequences

After storm No. 10 swept through the coastal areas of Nghe An, dozens of high-tech shrimp farms worth tens of billions of dong were damaged. Shrimp farmers are focusing on repairing the damage and trying to preserve their livelihoods.

The high-tech shrimp farming area in Hai Chau commune used to be a bright spot in the local economic development. After the storm, many ponds became muddy seas, roofs were blown away, and damaged machinery lay scattered about.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa in Xuan Chau hamlet, Hai Chau commune - owner of a high-tech shrimp farm said: "The storm completely destroyed the breakwater roof worth 1.2 billion VND, blew away the entire roof system worth 500 million VND, damaged 11 aerators, 40 electric motors. Shrimp larvae were also swept away, losing about 800 million VND. Total damage was over 4 billion VND".

Not only did he lose his property, Mr. Hoa said that the restoration would take a lot of time and effort. "We are having to hire two excavators to rebuild the breakwater and hire engineers to redesign the entire farming system. It is expected that we will have to wait until near the Lunar New Year before we can start releasing shrimp again," he said.

Not far away, Mr. Pham Xuan Quan in Tien Tuyen hamlet, Hai Chau commune, is also busy cleaning up. His family's shrimp farm is over 2,400 square meters, with an investment of over 3 billion VND, now severely damaged after the storm. "Strong winds caused most of the roof system to blow off and break, the water pump, air pump, and electrical system were all damaged. The total damage is nearly 300 million VND," said Mr. Quan.

Currently, Mr. Quan and his family are working on reinforcing the roof and repairing machinery to prepare for the new crop.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Huyen - Chairman of Hai Chau Commune People's Committee, storm No. 10 has affected about 35 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming area, most of which are located near the sea. The commune is currently calculating the damage and encouraging people to restore production soon. This is the main economic sector of the commune, so the government will propose to superiors to have practical support measures.

In the same situation, in hamlet 10 of An Chau commune - the shrimp farming "barn" of the commune, ponds were devastated, flood water was murky, and shrimp farming equipment and tools were left lying around.

Mr. Vu Van Thong, a long-time shrimp farmer, said he had invested nearly 1 billion VND on an area of ​​3,000 m². Although his family had prepared and secured the area carefully before the storm, they could not withstand the strong wind. Since the beginning of the year, they have suffered losses in 3 farming crops, and now they have to face this storm, it is really difficult.

A representative of the People's Committee of An Chau commune said that the whole commune has over 65 hectares of aquaculture area, of which over 50 hectares are intensive high-tech shrimp farming with the participation of 85 households. The recent storm swept across a large area, causing damage to most households.

After storm No. 10, many shrimp farming households in Nghe An fell into poverty, while investment debts were still there. Despite the difficulties, people still made efforts to repair ponds and machinery to promptly restore production. However, to recover from the natural disaster, they urgently need timely support in terms of capital, technology and policies from relevant sectors./.
