According to 80lv , recently many forums and social networks have widely spread rumors that Microsoft is about to acquire Valve for 16 billion USD. However, the Redmond technology giant quickly denied it.
This rumor was initiated by user xDiorCS on the social network X and quickly spread by many YouTubers and online news sites. Many people are worried about the prospect of Valve, especially the gaming platform Steam, being acquired by Microsoft.
Given the rapid spread, some have speculated that Newell’s consideration of selling the company stems from the Deadlock leaks of the past week. However, many others are skeptical, saying that such a deal is considered impossible under the current circumstances.
The rumor was started by a post on X
However, Tom Warren, a game industry insider and senior editor at The Verge , has denied the rumor. He confirmed that there is no acquisition deal in the works as rumored, nor does Microsoft have plans to acquire Valve in the near future.
Warren also added that the $16 billion figure is said to be too low compared to Valve's annual profits and there is no evidence provided by xDiorCS to prove this rumor.
The rumor may have originated from documents revealed during the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) lawsuit against Microsoft last year, which revealed that Microsoft had internally considered acquiring Nintendo or Valve in 2020. However, this was only an idea discussed internally and was never officially proposed to Nintendo or Valve.
