According to statistics from the United Nations, there are currently more than 800 million elderly people in the world and this number is expected to exceed 1.4 billion by 2030. In Vietnam, the elderly population accounts for nearly 13% and it is forecasted that by 2036, our country will officially enter the "aging population" phase. This is both an achievement of economic - social and health development, and poses many challenges in terms of social security, health care and promoting the role of the elderly.
At any stage, the elderly are always “tall trees”, shining examples of morality, personality, intelligence and courage. Many men and women, even though they are over 70 or 80 years old, continue to participate in research, create and contribute in many fields. In daily life, the elderly play a role in preserving culture, family traditions, and shaping the personality of the younger generation.
In the context of rapid population aging, Vietnam has issued many important policies such as the Law on the Elderly, the National Action Program on the Elderly for the period 2021-2030, along with a system of social insurance, health insurance , and subsidies. In particular, the network of intergenerational self-help clubs has been expanded, helping the elderly have a healthy playground, exercise, improve their spiritual life and promote their role in the community.
The health sector has also implemented many activities to care for the health of the elderly: organizing regular medical examinations, managing health records, opening geriatric departments at hospitals, encouraging the community to follow a reasonable diet and exercise. In addition, home care and socialized services for the elderly are increasingly developing, contributing to reducing the burden on families and improving the quality of life in old age.
In response to this year's International Day of the Elderly, many localities across the country have organized meaningful activities: Meeting, wishing longevity, giving gifts to the elderly in difficult circumstances; free health check-ups and consultations; organizing sports and art competitions; praising exemplary elderly people in production, maintaining security and order and social work.
These activities not only demonstrate the morality of “respecting the elderly and cherishing longevity” but also contribute to raising the awareness of the whole society about the responsibility of caring for and promoting the role of the elderly. At the same time, it affirms that old age is not a burden, but on the contrary, it is a valuable resource to build a united, humane and civilized community.
The International Day of Older Persons 2025 is an opportunity for each of us to appreciate, be grateful for and take practical actions for the elderly - those who have devoted their lives to their families, homeland and country. Caring for and promoting the role of the elderly is not only the responsibility of the State and social organizations, but also the sacred duty and sentiment of each family, each child and grandchild.
Let's spread the message "Respect, love and accompany the elderly" , so that old age is no longer a worry, but becomes a life worth living, happy and complete.
