Mercedes’ AMG performance division is going through a rough patch. The company has been under fire since its controversial decision in 2022 to go with a four-cylinder-only C63. Sales have fallen short of expectations, forcing dealers to offer deep discounts.

In addition, the recall of 219 AMG One cars, accounting for nearly 80% of the total number of cars produced, due to the risk of fire, further damaged the brand's image.
Against this backdrop, Mercedes announced that Michael Schiebe, the current CEO of AMG, will leave his position in early December to take up the role of Executive Board member in charge of Production, Quality and Supply Chain. Schiebe joined Mercedes in 2004 and has been at the helm of AMG for two and a half years. The identity of his successor remains a closely guarded secret, fueling speculation in the industry.

Despite the difficulties, AMG still has high hopes for the new generation of engines. The company is preparing to launch a Euro 7-compliant V8 engine, while maintaining the inline-6 engine for its loyal customer group.
In the electric vehicle segment, AMG is developing the GT XX concept into a pure electric sports sedan, and is also planning a high-performance SUV. Mr. Schiebe once affirmed: "We want to create the best electric car experience on the market."

However, analysts say the successor to AMG will face two major challenges: maintaining its traditional engine identity and proving its ability to win customers with high-performance electric vehicles in a rapidly changing global market.
