Press conference on the morning of September 12 at the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly

With the theme "Promoting the role of the elderly in the era of growth", in the Month of Action for the Elderly (October 2025), activities to care for, support and promote the role of the elderly will continue to be promoted nationwide with the highlight being the humanitarian program "Bright eyes for the elderly".

This is the information given at a press conference on the morning of September 12 at the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly ( Hanoi ).

Accordingly, the launching ceremony of the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam took place on September 27 in Hanoi, where the implementation of the humanitarian program "Bright eyes for the elderly" for the period 2025-2028, organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank, will also be announced.

Many useful playgrounds

With the theme "Promoting the role of the elderly in the era of growth", in the Action Month 2025, many diverse and practical activities will be deployed, from sports, culture, arts to health care programs, legal advice, visiting and giving gifts to the elderly in difficult circumstances.

The Vietnam Association of the Elderly will coordinate with the Department of Physical Education and Sports to organize four national sports tournaments for the middle-aged and elderly, including: volleyball, chess, swimming and badminton.

In localities, the Association at all levels will simultaneously organize sports festivals, art performances, health care activities, and folk dances, contributing to creating useful playgrounds and encouraging the elderly to live happily and healthily.

In addition, the Action Month also includes meaningful activities such as: Visiting, giving gifts, organizing health check-ups and consultations for the elderly; promoting propaganda and legal aid in the context of population aging.

In particular, the elderly are encouraged to play their role in building new rural areas, civilized urban areas, protecting the environment, maintaining security and order; participating in the digital transformation, green transformation, starting a business and creating suitable jobs.

An important highlight of this year's Action Month is the humanitarian program "Bright eyes for the elderly" for the period 2025-2028. The program's goal is for over 90% of Association officials at all levels to be trained in eye care knowledge and skills; over 90% of the elderly to be examined and screened for basic eye diseases, of which 100% of cataract cases will be treated.

At the press conference, Permanent Vice President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly Truong Xuan Cu said that the "Bright Eyes for the Elderly" Program in 2025 has been upgraded in both scale and nature.

Vietnam currently has about 17 million elderly people, of which the rate of eye diseases, especially cataracts, in the 60-70 age group is still quite high.

For many years, the Central Association has mobilized organizations and individuals to support cataract surgery for the elderly in localities. However, resources from the health system and the patients themselves are still limited.

This program aims to mobilize the broad cooperation of society, from agencies, businesses to hospitals, to reduce surgery costs, creating conditions for many elderly people to access the best eye care services.

In 2025, the program will be piloted in two localities with large ethnic minority populations, remote, mountainous and island areas. In the 2026-2028 period, the program will be expanded nationwide, prioritizing areas with a higher than average proportion of elderly people.

Activities include: Propagating and mobilizing the elderly to participate in examination and screening; supporting free or low-cost surgery for disadvantaged people; consulting and guiding eye care in the community; and raising awareness of the whole society about preventing blindness in the elderly.

The Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly said that the combination of the Action Month for the Elderly and the “Bright Eyes for the Elderly” Program shows comprehensive attention to the spiritual life and physical health of the elderly. This is also a practical action to realize the Party and State's policy of adapting to population aging, ensuring that the elderly continue to live healthy and useful lives, contributing to the development of the country.
