Starting to appear since 2021, induced earthquakes often occur in the former Kon Tum province, concentrated in the former Kon Plong district, now Quang Ngai.
The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences , Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) has just released information about the earthquake.
Specifically, at Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province, at 18:52:51 ( Hanoi time) on October 5, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred at the coordinates (14.907 degrees North latitude, 108.160 degrees East longitude), with a focal depth of about 8.1 km.
About 3 minutes later, at 18:55:39 (Hanoi time), a magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred at coordinates 14.862 degrees North latitude, 108.142 degrees East longitude, with a focal depth of about 8.1 km.
Immediately after that, at 18:56:22 (Hanoi time), there was an earthquake with magnitude 3.6; coordinates 14.904 degrees North latitude, 108.248 degrees East longitude, focal depth of about 8.1 km.
The fourth earthquake occurred at 19:00:52 (Hanoi time), with a magnitude of 4.3; at coordinates 14.848 degrees North latitude, 108.141 degrees East longitude, with a focal depth of about 8.1 km.
The 5th earthquake occurred at 19:26:51 (Hanoi time), with a magnitude of 2.9, at the location with coordinates 14.871 degrees North latitude, 108.143 degrees East longitude, with a focal depth of about 8.1 km.
All five earthquakes have a disaster risk level of 0. The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor these earthquakes.
Many days before, many earthquakes also occurred in this area; in which on September 11, an earthquake of magnitude 4.5, level 1 natural disaster risk.
According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences), these are stimulated earthquakes.
Earthquakes often occur in series. Triggered earthquakes also occur in cycles, with periods when earthquakes occur more frequently and periods when they occur less frequently.
Before and after an earthquake of magnitude 4 or greater, there are often foreshocks and aftershocks, which are small earthquakes. The larger the earthquake, the more foreshocks and aftershocks.
From 2021 to now, earthquakes have been recorded frequently in Quang Ngai (formerly c), in which earthquakes caused widespread tremors. The largest was the earthquake at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0; before that on August 23, 2022, there was a magnitude of 4.7.
According to preliminary studies, earthquakes are expected to continue in the coming time in this area, but the magnitude is unlikely to be greater than 5.5.
