According to Dr. Phu Chi Dung, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital, the hospital is the southern region's final hospital for blood transfusion and hematology, where it comprehensively treats all hematological diseases from benign, malignant, to genetic diseases in both children and adults. Each year, the hospital receives nearly 10,000 inpatients and 140,000 outpatient visits.

In the early days, the hospital only took on the role of receiving whole blood, preparing blood products and supporting the treatment of blood diseases with other hospitals. Only a few dozen units of blood were received and distributed each day. However, to date, the hospital's blood bank has met international standards. In 2024 alone, the hospital produced up to 650,000 units of various blood products, supplying Ho Chi Minh City and some neighboring provinces.

In particular, on July 15, 1995, the Ho Chi Minh City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital marked a major turning point with the first successful hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Since then, the hospital has performed more than 700 transplants, becoming the unit with the highest number of transplants in the country.

According to Dr. Phu Chi Dung, the hospital will soon start building a new blood bank with the largest capacity and the most modern in the region, to meet the needs of storing and supplying blood for Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces. The hospital also promotes the early purchase of new and rare drugs, helping patients access advanced treatment drugs without having to go abroad. In fact, many patients who have been treated abroad have now returned to be treated here.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy acknowledged and highly appreciated the hospital's achievements in recent times, and requested the hospital to maintain JCI international quality standards. The hospital should soon develop a second facility in Binh Duong or Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old). It is impossible for patients from Ho Chi Minh City in remote areas to travel 5 hours every day, including traffic jams, to come here for treatment.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Ho Chi Minh City is entering a new stage of development and preparing to build a system of specialized hospitals, especially to serve the people of the city and the region widely and long-term. She requested the Ho Chi Minh City health sector to promote four strategic goals: building Ho Chi Minh City into a specialized medical center of the region; developing smart hospitals; promoting precision medicine, digital medicine and personalized medicine; improving the capacity of preventive medicine and specialized treatment.

The Ho Chi Minh City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital will be one of the key units in this development strategy, not only leading in diagnosis and treatment, but also in digital transformation, scientific research and international cooperation. The health sector needs to continue to innovate a modern and transparent hospital management model. Taking the patient as the center and proactively planning and developing a team of leading experts to best serve the people, Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy emphasized.
