Early in the morning of September 15, Tran Thanh posted a status discussing his determination to make a film to be shown during Tet every year. The motivation for him to speak up came from an article advising "Tran Thanh, slow down a bit!".
A self-respecting 'chef'
Tran Thanh admitted that this was good-intentioned advice from someone who had observed him long enough in the profession.
Regarding the advice to slow down in filmmaking, Tran Thanh responded: "Thanh is someone who understands what he is doing and who he is serving. Once Thanh changes direction and invests in a new field like cinema, he certainly has a plan for a decade and 10 years, not just a program called "Tran Thanh's Tet movies every year".
Thanh thinks that filmmaking is like the work of an Omakase chef. Diners will not know in advance what they will eat today, the only reason they come to the restaurant is because of their trust in the chef!
And his job is to constantly surprise diners with the dishes he creates and serves without disappointing or leaving them disappointed.
Tran Thanh agrees that any work needs a long enough time to "conceive and ferment". But he said slowing down filmmaking would be "the Tran Thanh of the following years, when energy, creativity and life experience are more exhausted".
At that time, Tran Thanh will "seclude himself and only spend time experiencing and contemplating new worlds so that he doesn't repeat himself."

Now, the director is determined that he is approaching the age of 40, still full of energy and has many stories to tell. Besides, he considers himself responsible for the "Tran Thanh's Tet movie watching habit" that he created. He does not want to disappoint the audience's expectations.
"However, Thanh is a filmmaker, a self-respecting "chef". The rule is: If the dish is bad, do not serve it to guests" - he wrote.
Tran Thanh can not slow down yet
In the past 5 years, Tran Thanh has continuously released the films Bo Gia (2021), Nha Ba Nu (2023), Mai (2024) and Bo Tu Bao Thu (2025) on the occasion of Tet. When meeting the press, he also said that he wanted to bring the habit of "going to the cinema to watch Tran Thanh movies every Tet" to the audience, so he was determined to make Tet movies every year.
His Tet film series is not long, just in the beginning stage, but due to the huge revenue, the audience's expectations are getting higher and higher. This year, The Four Guardians - a romantic comedy - is considered to be of lower quality compared to Tran Thanh's previous family films.
Recently, the movie Mai was surpassed by Red Rain to reach the number one position at the box office. It is normal and encouraging for the market for Vietnamese film records to be surpassed, but the Tran Thanh brand was "dissected" by netizens.
However, Tran Thanh is still the name that "guarantees" revenue, and is one of the few rare box office stars recognized in the Vietnamese market.
