On October 18, CTWant reported that the incident occurred at a hotel in Tokyo (Japan). Accordingly, a Chinese guest, while staying, conveniently hung a shirt hanger on a device mounted on the ceiling - which was actually an automatic sprinkler head of the fire suppression system.

This action accidentally broke the extremely sensitive “glass ball” inside, causing the system to activate immediately. In just a few minutes, a large amount of water gushed down, flooding the entire room and 2 floors of the hotel.

Although the staff quickly turned off the water valve, the incident still caused severe damage to many areas. After conducting an inventory of the damage, the hotel calculated the costs of cleaning, drying, replacing carpets, repairing electrical equipment and furniture... and then sent the guest a bill of 160,000 yuan (more than 591 million VND).

This huge compensation amount has left tourists "stunned". The two sides are negotiating through legal channels.

Previously, in Guiyang city (Guizhou province, China), a similar incident occurred when a tourist hung clothes on the fire sprinkler head, causing the system to activate and water to flood the room.

Afterwards, the hotel only asked the tourist to pay compensation of about 2,000 NDT (7.4 million VND), but the actual damage was estimated at up to 20,000 NDT (74 million VND).

Fire protection experts say that automatic sprinklers in hotels are designed to react to high temperatures or smoke and are extremely sensitive, with a glass bulb containing a liquid that expands when exposed to heat. Just a slight impact or hanging a heavy object on the glass bulb can break it, causing water to spray out immediately.

“This is a safety device, not a clothes hanger. Hanging the wrong item on it is asking for trouble,” an expert warned.

Under Japanese law, hotels have the right to claim compensation if they can prove that the damage was caused by the guest's negligence. However, they must also provide full evidence, invoices and detailed reports.

As for tourists, if they feel the compensation is too high, they can still sue or ask the authorities to intervene.

The incident has attracted a lot of attention on Chinese social media. Many people commented that this is a “costly lesson” for the habit of being careless when staying in hotels. Some even shared pictures of fire sprinklers in the hotel room to remind each other: “Never hang things there!”

A female tourist in her 20s was arrested by Shanghai police for allegedly defrauding many hotels, restaurants, taxi drivers and men she met online, allowing her to live "for free" in this expensive city for 2 months.
