Artificial intelligence impacts Korean film production

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a useful tool to support Korean filmmakers. AI is applied in many stages of film production and creates many works that attract audiences.

"Kiss Lighting - Ghost Cupid" (pictured), which premiered in December 2024, is the first Korean drama made by AI. According to information from the production company Kings Creative, AI was used to write the script and create images. Specifically, the director wrote a rough outline of the content, then used ChatGPT to edit the script based on ideas from discussions to complete the script. AI tools: HeyGen, ElevenLabs and Midjourney were used to create images.

Jung In Su, a producer at Kings Creative, said that AI significantly simplifies processes that used to take a lot of time and effort. Previously, changing an actor's face on screen took days to render, but with AI, it can be done in a short time and there are many different options. In addition, using AI only costs about 100,000 won for countless illustrations, while creating a human-made illustration costs about 200,000-300,000 won. This is also the reason why many Korean film producers are increasingly using AI.

Specifically, MBC C&I has launched a program to select 12 new creators to develop films with AI and extended reality (XR) technology. Of these, 9 works were produced experimentally using AI. Yang Eek Jun, producer at Mateo AI Studio, said that with AI, filmmaking can take place at home and takes less effort and time. This creates conditions for young filmmakers and independent filmmakers to make their own products without having to worry about funding. For example, the film "One More Pumpkin" by director Kwon Han-seul almost completely uses AI to create all the scenes, sounds, and the main characters are an old couple. The film was made in 5 days and was well received by the audience when it was shown. "One More Pumpkin" won the Grand Prize and the Audience Award at the 2024 Dubai AI Film Festival.

Experts also believe that one of the biggest advantages of using AI in film production is that it significantly reduces time and costs, making it possible for anyone to become a filmmaker. Producer Jung In Su said that many screenwriters and directors he knows often use ChatGPT to research and support the process of writing scripts and making films. Meanwhile, producer Yang Eek Jun believes that using AI in film production is necessary in today's technological competition, but if you want to tell a compelling story that attracts audiences, you cannot rely on AI. In fact, AI-generated content often does not keep audiences for too long, so human creativity is still needed to create storylines that can attract audiences to watch a film several dozen minutes long. Therefore, AI is a good support tool for the filmmaking process if used appropriately.
