Coach Troussier talks with Quoc Viet on the sidelines
After the 32nd SEA Games, the U.22 Vietnam players will immediately rush into the race to compete for a place on the field at V-League and first-class clubs. Meanwhile, coach Philippe Troussier will prepare for the next campaign when he takes the U.20 Vietnam team to the 2022 ASIAD, which will be held in Hangzhou (China) in September.
Many people were surprised when VFF and Coach Troussier did not use players born in 1999 or later as per the tournament regulations, but instead assigned the task to players born in 2003, namely U.20 Vietnam, and "handicap" opponents up to 4 years older.
After winning the bronze medal at SEA Games 32 with U.22 Vietnam, Mr. Troussier shared about this: "To explain the decision of VFF, I completely sympathize and understand that this is not an easy decision at all.
The joy of victory of U.22 Vietnam
First of all, the Vietnam U.20 team will participate in the 2022 ASIAD because this tournament is not part of FIFA Days, so clubs are not obliged to release players. The U.23 Asian qualifiers will be held at the end of August, when the V-League and the first division are entering the final stages of tension.
My spirit is to aim for the goal of preserving the integrity of Vietnam's domestic tournaments. It is a fact that most of Vietnam's U.20 and U.22 players have not played regularly for their clubs in domestic tournaments.
Even so, it is difficult for U.22 Vietnam to gather the best players because the clubs retain them to ensure the club's interests. Therefore, VFF and I agreed to participate in ASIAD with a younger force."
Ho Van Cuong scored a double against U.22 Myanmar
At the same time, Mr. Troussier continued: "My priority is for U.23 Vietnam to play in the U.23 Asian qualifiers. The national team will play in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. But for the national teams to achieve good results, the interests of the clubs must be preserved.
I want to cooperate with the club, because if we want the strongest and best-prepared team, the tournament will have to stop a lot. It is not normal for the V-League to only play a few matches and then be interrupted.
In total, V-League 2023 has been suspended 3 times, 3 times the clubs had to start preparing as a new tournament. I always want to build the national team based on the foundation from the club. The Vietnam national team or U.20 Vietnam is only strong when the club is strong and the domestic league is even stronger."
