China announced on October 21 that it has officially completed the world's first underwater data center (UDC) project powered by wind energy in Shanghai, marking an important milestone in developing sustainable and environmentally friendly computing infrastructure.
The above project is located in the China Free Trade Pilot Zone (Shanghai) with a total investment of up to 1.6 billion yuan (equivalent to about 226 million USD) and a total power capacity of 24 megawatts.
Unlike traditional ground-based data centers, the facility is designed to use more than 95% of its electricity from green energy sources, thereby reducing electricity consumption by an additional 22.8%, while saving 100% of water use and more than 90% of land area.
The project's completion marks a breakthrough in integrating underwater data centers with offshore renewable energy.
Besides, this is a typical model for developing computing infrastructure in an environmentally friendly direction, minimizing carbon emissions, and at the same time promoting domestic consumption of offshore wind power./.
