According to VNA, in an article published on August 26, the Kampuchea Thmey Daily online newspaper said that August 19 this year marks the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution. This historic event not only opened a turning point to help Vietnam escape from colonial rule, but also became a historical link with Laos and Cambodia on the Indochina peninsula.

The article states that the Cambodia-Vietnam relationship over the past eight decades has gone through many ups and downs, but is now considered to have made remarkable progress. Analysts in Phnom Penh believe that with the commitment of the two countries' leaders, bilateral relations will continue to be strengthened and expanded.

On August 26, 2025, the Kampuchea Thmey Daily published an article titled “Analysts: Vietnam and Cambodia support each other in national liberation in the past and national development at present” on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025) and Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025). The article quotes Cambodian politician Thong Mengdavid as saying that Vietnam supported Cambodia in overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, and has continued to help the country organize and train resources to protect, rebuild and build the country to this day. Before that, in the period before 1975, Cambodia also supported Vietnam in the struggle to unify the country, ending the division between the North and the South.

Currently, Cambodia and Vietnam are strengthening cooperation in many areas such as border security, crime prevention, defense diplomacy, trade and cultural exchange. Bilateral trade turnover has exceeded 10 billion USD/year thanks to cooperation in agriculture , energy, production and connectivity projects.

The newspaper quoted Mr. Uch Leang, Acting Director of the Institute of Asian-African and Middle Eastern Studies (Cambodia Institute of International Relations under the RAC), acknowledging the continuous development in Cambodia-Vietnam relations since the August Revolution in 1945. He emphasized that with the efforts of generations of leaders and people of the two countries, bilateral relations have developed steadily under the motto of 'good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability' established by both sides since 2005, bringing practical benefits to the people.

On August 19, the Kampuchea Thmey Daily newspaper quoted Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Nguyen Minh Vu as affirming that Cambodia and Vietnam are not only neighboring countries but also close brothers in both wartime and peacetime. This message was emphasized by him at a special discussion on Vietnam's 80-year development journey after the August Revolution and Vietnam-Cambodia relations, which took place on August 18 at the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh.

Speaking to Cambodian intellectuals, businessmen and former students who studied in Vietnam, Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu emphasized that important historical milestones in each country have a certain impact on bilateral relations. Vietnam and Cambodia are not only close neighbors with a long-standing relationship, but also two peoples who have always united, shared and supported each other in difficult times, together overcoming many historical ups and downs. The Ambassador affirmed that the August Revolution is a strong example and source of encouragement, creating a great driving force for the national liberation movement in Asia, Africa and Latin America, especially in Cambodia and Laos, two neighboring countries on the Indochina peninsula.

According to Cambodian media, the relationship between the two countries has a long and complicated history, but it cannot be denied that Vietnam and Cambodia have supported each other in the cause of national liberation, bringing peace to the people. Cambodia supported Vietnam in the struggle to unify the country on April 30, 1975. Vietnam helped liberate Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge regime.

From this perspective, the Kampuchea Thmey Daily newspaper commented: “Vietnamese volunteer soldiers fought side by side with the revolutionary armed forces and Cambodian people to liberate the country from the Khmer Rouge regime on January 7, 1979. This was a victory of great historical significance, helping Cambodia escape the genocidal regime, revive and enter an era of independence, freedom and peace.”

Cambodian media also quoted Ambassador Nguyen Minh Vu as affirming that today, the Vietnam-Cambodia relationship has entered a phase of comprehensive, mutually beneficial cooperation, increasingly deepening and becoming more effective. On that basis, the relationship between the two countries continues to be consolidated, bringing practical benefits to the people, while actively contributing to peace, stability and cooperation in the region and internationally.

Also according to Khmer Times, at the seminar, journalist Khieu Kola, senior editor of CNC Television, emphasized the important role of Vietnam in the existence and recovery of Cambodia.

He said: "If the Vietnamese volunteer army had not helped Cambodia resist and liberate the country from the Khmer Rouge regime, I would not be sitting here today."

In a news release on August 18, the Cambodian National News Agency (AKP) reported that Cambodia and Vietnam both experienced decades of colonial rule. Therefore, the struggle against colonialism was not only a political movement but also a struggle to preserve national identity, customs and traditions and ensure the right to self-determination for their own future.
