Artists of the Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre diligently practice to prepare for programs and festivals. |
Practice each movement, choose each performance
In the days of July, inside the practice space of the Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre, the bustling atmosphere permeates through every tone of the strings, drums, and beats, blending with the sweat soaking the artists' shirts.
“We are preparing for many big events, such as participating in the live TV program celebrating the success of the August Revolution and National Day September 2, to the ASEAN Music Festival, the National Tuong and Folk Opera Festival at the end of this year,” said Meritorious Artist Hoang Trong Cuong, Director of the Theater.
Each performance is carefully selected to ensure artistic elements and Hue identity. Particularly at the ASEAN Music Festival, the program the Theater brings has the theme "Convergence of Spirits" with about 5 performances, in which the performances are developed on the basis of Nha Nhac pieces - an intangible heritage recognized by UNESCO. "We not only recreate ancient pieces, but also create them to suit the modern stage, but still retain the "soul" of the royal court - solemnity, sophistication and depth of expression", Mr. Cuong emphasized.
Rehearsing for festivals is also an opportunity for the Theater to "hand over the keys" to the younger generation of artists who are gradually inheriting the heritage value. In the rehearsal space, artists Truong Thi Thuy Linh (zither) and Truong Tran Quoc Trong (pipa) are two of the typical faces who are diligently working on each note and each rhythm. "The artists practice over and over again so that the whole group is completely in sync. Each performance is a time to learn and improve," Thuy Linh shared. Artist Trong also expressed: "The Theater has nearly 50 musicians, but when going to festivals, only 15-20 people are selected. Everyone wants to participate, so they must always improve and make an effort, because if they are not good enough, someone else will replace them."
In the field of Tuong - a subject that requires comprehensive skills, artist Pham Thi Le, who was recently awarded the title of Meritorious Artist, shared: "Participating in festivals and performances, artists, especially young artists, are very proud to have the opportunity to bring Hue's traditional art to audiences at home and abroad."
Mr. Hoang Trong Cuong also added that letting the next generation take on the main role is a long-term responsibility. Heritage cannot exist without successors. Stages like this are the best practical schools. Therefore, in addition to training techniques, the Theater also organizes thematic talks, introduces the history of royal art, and analyzes each performance so that artists not only perform but also understand and deeply absorb the cultural values they are expressing.
Bringing Hue identity to all regions
Not stopping at art festivals, Hue Royal Traditional Arts Theatre is also invited to participate in national-scale television programs. On the occasion of the upcoming 80th anniversary of National Day (September 2), the Theatre will coordinate with the People's Army Television to produce a live television concert program. Also on this occasion, the Theatre will re-stage the play "Road to Golden Week" - a work that won a Silver Medal at the National Arts Festival.
“Through art, we want to recreate the revolutionary spirit in the language of royal theater, creating a unique feature of Hue in the art space of the whole country,” Mr. Cuong shared. Behind the stage lights are hundreds of hours of practice, editing, sweat and dedication of the collective of artists. For them, each performance is not just a competition, but a story, a cultural message.
Meritorious Artist Hoang Trong Cuong affirmed: “What makes me most proud is that whether performing in a large auditorium or just a small stage, we artists always maintain our character, respecting every movement, every beat. That is the “Hue quality” blending into the flow of modern art.”
