Retiring early at the age of 48, Ms. Trinh fulfilled her dream of traveling everywhere. Currently, she chooses to stay in each place for a few months to enjoy life.
6 months ago, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Trinh submitted her resignation at the age of 48. During those 6 months, she traveled to Europe, Türkiye, Morocco, Laos for 1 month each, then returned to Vietnam.
To start her retirement life, she initially planned to buy another house for vacation. But she thought again, “I already have a small house in Saigon, if I buy another one now, it won’t be easy to sell later.”
She changed her mind and asked people in similar situations and conditions to find a piece of land somewhere and build a retirement community to live together for the rest of their lives.
She gathered and arranged a group to go to Da Lat to see the land, but many problems began to arise, each person had a different opinion. She felt it was not good, so she went back to her plan of living alone.
She had the idea of choosing a beautiful place with a good climate to live for a few months and then move on. “A neighbor who also travels a lot told me that Phu Quoc is very beautiful this season. So I packed my bags and left.”
Up to now, she has been in Phu Quoc for 1 month. According to the plan, she will visit Hoi An in 1 month. The next destination is "unknown".
“I don’t plan that far ahead, I’ll just go with the flow. I like the Northwest, but I might go abroad…”
In Phu Quoc, she rented a small room with a friend she met by chance. Every day, she went out, went to the market, cooked... like a local, not a luxury resort.
She believes that is the most profound way to explore a land.
“Currently, we only spend 6 million VND/person/month, including rent and food and living expenses. I can pay more, but why 6 million VND?
Because I think a worker who works for a company with a monthly salary of only 5-6 million VND can still live. So, even though I am going out for fun, I should also have self-discipline.”
Before retiring, Ms. Trinh worked for a Japanese company in Ho Chi Minh City with a fairly stable income. During her 18 years working here, she took many leave to travel around the world . Up to now, she has been to about 30 places, experiencing many cultures.
“I am impressed with the people in Türkiye and Taiwan (China). Taiwanese people are very sincere, while Turkish people are generous and open-minded. I feel their kindness and positive energy.”
She said that when she travels a lot, she meets many people from all over the world with different and admirable lifestyles. Many people give her positive life energy.
Currently, in Phu Quoc, she is enjoying a relaxing life with great climate, delicious food, and being able to swim in the sea whenever she likes...
One thing she found a little strange compared to her imagination was that in Phu Quoc there were many houses built in European architecture. Many streets were also named in foreign languages.
However, she did not see it as something she did not like. Instead, when she set foot in a new land, she always happily accepted it for what it was.
When asked what it takes to enjoy this lifestyle, she did not hesitate to say: “The first thing that comes to mind is that I am not married. The second is that I have a solid financial source.”
In the past, in order to travel around the world, she also set a very scientific and strict spending plan for herself.
“From a person who shopped a lot, I cut down on things like clothes, fashionable shoes, and limited gatherings with friends… I also set aside a certain amount of money for travel each year, not spending it on anything else. So I always have money to travel.
In addition, when traveling, I often choose houses with kitchens to cook, helping to save on food costs. Thanks to that, my trips can last 10-20 days and are not too expensive."
She gave evidence that the total cost of all her trips over the past 6 months was about 200 million VND – a very affordable price for 4 months of overseas travel.
Talking about financial issues, she confided: “Many people say that when you get old, you have to have a husband and children to be okay. But for me, having a salary is okay when I get old. I think that to have a free and proactive life like now, financial independence is very important.”
Currently, her life is the dream of many people. However, she believes that a meaningful life is not influenced by external factors, "but the important thing is that you are happy and healthy every day".
“No matter where you are or where you go, whether you feel at peace, eat well, and sleep well is what matters.”
