Affirming the "throne" of the fruit and vegetable industry, durian exports reached the milestone of 1.2 billion USD after 8 months. In 2024, durian exports will reach 2 - 2.5 billion USD. |
Maximize the convenience for durian customs clearance through Lao Cai border gate
Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2 (Lao Cai) is one of the important border gates for agricultural import and export with China. Since the beginning of the year, agricultural exports through Kim Thanh Border Gate have been flourishing, with turnover value increasing compared to the same period last year. Exported goods are mainly traditional items such as peeled wood, dried cassava and fresh fruits such as dragon fruit, rambutan, fresh banana and durian... Imported goods are mainly coke, fertilizer, vegetables, ornamental plants, chemicals and equipment.

Notably, durian has been officially exported through Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2 since October 2022. At that time, the number of exported vehicles was still small. However, up to now, the export turnover of this item has increased rapidly every month. According to Lao Cai Border Gate Customs Branch, at Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2, since the beginning of the year, durian has been exported through the border gate up to 138.4 thousand tons, the export turnover of durian reached over 150 million USD.
At Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2, Lao Cai Province, there are currently 50-80 vehicles transporting durian for export every day. This is a record high number ever at this border gate. Each container is worth nearly 2 billion VND, 4-5 times higher than traditional export fruits.
To create maximum convenience for this fruit, Lao Cai has prioritized the green lane and provided maximum support for procedures. Previously, a fruit truck had to complete 4-5 documents related to plant quarantine, but now it has been reduced to only 1 type of document. Thanks to the facilitation solutions of the unit and the functional forces at the border gate, the customs clearance time for durian and other agricultural export products is only about 5 minutes/shipment.
Therefore, although durian has only been processed here for 1 year, it has become the export commodity group with the largest turnover at Lao Cai International Border Gate Customs Branch.
By the end of September, durian alone reached a turnover of 182 million USD, accounting for 42.4% of the total export turnover of the entire Department. Notably, durian also far surpassed the traditional agricultural export groups of the Department such as dragon fruit, lychee, cassava, watermelon, etc.
About 52,000 tons of durian have been exported through Kim Thanh Border Gate since the beginning of the year, with a turnover of nearly 200 million USD and is the agricultural product with the largest export turnover value through Lao Cai Border Gate. This is the result of promoting trade promotion, promoting the role of the gateway, and supporting businesses participating in import and export through the area.
According to the latest information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , by the end of August 2023, fruit and vegetable exports brought in 3.45 billion USD, an increase of 57.5% over the same period last year.
Notably, durian alone brought in export revenue of over 1.2 billion USD, accounting for 30% of the total turnover of the fruit and vegetable group and nearly 3 times higher than the turnover of the whole year 2022 (420 million USD). In which, the Chinese market is the main market for durian.
Continue to strongly reform customs clearance procedures
By the end of September, at Lao Cai International Border Gate Customs Branch, there were 581 enterprises carrying out import-export procedures, with 44,220 declarations.
Total import-export turnover reached nearly 747 million USD, of which export reached 429.5 million USD; import reached 317.48 million USD.
In order to create favorable conditions to actively support businesses and individuals participating in import and export activities, recently, Lao Cai province and relevant agencies have continued administrative reforms and adjusted infrastructure fees to suit actual conditions.
In particular, on August 21, the Lao Cai Provincial Economic Zone Management Board officially deployed digital applications at Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2 to shorten customs clearance time, import and export of goods; help businesses complete procedures, look up, monitor remotely, and grasp which stage of administrative procedures the business is in and where the problems are.
According to the strategic orientation for socio-economic development and import-export of Lao Cai by 2030, Lao Cai province aims to become a locality with rapid, sustainable and comprehensive development on the pillars of economy, society, environment, ensuring national defense - security and foreign affairs by 2030. Improve competitiveness based on attracting investment to develop the socio-economic infrastructure system, promote comprehensive digital transformation and improve the quality of human resources. Take the development of border gate economy, processing and manufacturing industry, tourism, and commodity agriculture as driving forces; become a growth pole and a center of trade connection between Vietnam and ASEAN countries with the Southwest region - China.
Lao Cai's goal is to bring the value of import and export of goods to 15 billion USD by 2030.
