The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has just requested strict control (check for yellow O substance) of durian shipments exported to China but returned.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of August 7, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu, deputy director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) confirmed that the unit had just sent a document to regional plant quarantine sub-departments regarding strict inspection of returned durian shipments exported to China.

Accordingly, according to the announcement of the General Administration of Customs of China since the beginning of the year, this unit has inspected and discovered a number of Vietnamese durian shipments containing yellow O (auramine O).

This chemical is not allowed to be used for food according to food safety regulations of China and Vietnam.

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection requires regional plant quarantine sub-departments to conduct strict inspections on durian shipments exported to China but re-imported, including checking documents and taking samples to test for yellow O.

In case the shipments have been tested by the General Administration of Customs of China with yellow O substance not detected, the normal inspection method will be applied.

"The exported durian shipments returned by China will be kept for testing for yellow O. If they pass (no yellow O - PV), they will be allowed to be brought back for consumption. If they fail, the regional plant quarantine department will report back to the inter-sectoral agency at the border gate for handling according to regulations," Mr. Hieu added.

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection requires regional plant quarantine sub-departments to strictly inspect until the department announces the cessation of strict inspection.

According to the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), from June 2025, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports will make an impressive breakthrough with the recovery of the durian industry.

Key durian growing regions such as the Central Highlands and the Southeast - where cadmium contamination rates are low - have helped more goods meet export standards.

After a decline in exports in the first four months of the year, durian exports began to show signs of recovery in May, reaching 204 million USD.

In June, it continued to increase sharply to over 300 million USD. It is estimated that in July, durian export turnover reached 350 - 400 million USD.

This helped increase fruit and vegetable exports in June and July to about 800 million USD/month compared to April and May (about 500 million USD/month).
