According to KBS, in the context of the Korean cultural wave (Hallyu) getting more and more attention, this country has proposed a strategy to use K-Culture (Korean culture) as a highlight to attract the attention of the whole world. Key economic events will be combined with cultural programs in a variety of ways, creating an APEC that combines culture and economy, while maximizing the effectiveness of the hosting.
Gyeongju City Government in North Gyeongsang Province believes that the thousand-year history of the Silla Dynasty and the local world cultural heritages have contributed to Gyeongju being chosen as the host of the APEC summit. Therefore, the city government will take advantage of local culture, the cradle of the Hallyu wave, to attract the attention of the whole world.
The three major events that received significant investment include a Hanbok fashion show, a multimedia art show at the Bomun tourist area, and a K-pop concert. The Hanbok fashion show, held at the Woljeonggyo wooden bridge area, will recreate a stage combining five traditional Korean elements: Hanbok costumes, Hansik cuisine, Hanok houses, Hanji paper, and Hangeul.
The Bomun Multimedia Art Show will combine nighttime landscape lighting at Bomun Lake with lasers, drones and sculptures, and light projections on architectural structures to create a modern effect. Meanwhile, the K-pop concert at the relics in eastern Gyeongju will feature K-pop artists and artists from APEC member economies.
During the reception for the delegation attending the APEC 2025 Cultural Industry High-Level Dialogue on August 27, a Wine Experience event was held for the Heads of State banquet, in which the delegates tasted four types of traditional local wines. Gyeongju City also plans to add K-pop performances, K-contents events, and K-food to the summit reception, in order to provide the leaders and their spouses with an opportunity to experience Korean culture.
In particular, the Korean Government held a special exhibition for the first time displaying all six Silla Dynasty gold crowns, along with a K-Art exhibition and a cultural performance program combining modern technology at the gala party.
Economic events within the framework of APEC will also incorporate cultural elements, aiming to simultaneously promote the Hallyu wave and the image of Korea, one of the 10 largest economies in the world. At the Gyeongju Expo Square, major corporations will introduce new technology through the “K-tech Showcase” event, while also displaying industrial history and future technology.
North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo emphasized that North Gyeongsang Province is a cultural center with the largest number of world heritage sites, and Gyeongju City is truly a “roofless museum.” The provincial and city governments will introduce to the world the outstanding cultural values, the origin of Hallyu, and the achievements of Korea’s economic development through the upcoming APEC summit.
The Seorabeol Pungnyu traditional art program to celebrate the APEC 2025 summit will take place from September 12 to October 29 at Gyochon Village in Gyeongju City and many other locations. The program will have the participation of 31 art troupes with more than 700 artists, bringing 37 performances.
