Gratitude to ancestors

The death anniversary of the theater's ancestors is a cultural ceremony closely associated with the traditional beliefs of Vietnamese art. Mr. Le Van Bai - Vice Chairman of the Provincial Literature and Arts Association said that the 12th day of the 8th lunar month every year has gone down in the history of national culture, the day when artists across the country remember and pay tribute to the ancestors of the theater profession, generations of artists who have made many contributions to the country's theater arts. This traditional day also helps create conditions for generations to meet, exchange, and share stories about their profession and life.

Theatrical art brings many spiritual and cultural values. Through each song, each play, each theatrical activity reflects the thoughts, feelings, dreams, and deep feelings of people in daily life, the aspiration to build a beautiful and rich homeland. The theater always directs the audience to the values ​​of truth, goodness, and beauty.

According to Mr. Le Van Bai, it is the content and ideological values ​​of amateur songs, plays, reformed operas, and du ke operas that make stage art bring great value in terms of awareness, education , aesthetics, entertainment, and enriching the national cultural identity.

Previously, the theaters of the three provinces of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh , and Ben Tre all had their own unique features, but they had one thing in common: despite going through many ups and downs, the theater arts were always painstakingly cultivated and passed down through many generations of artists, famous musicians, composers, etc.

Provincial leaders through the ages, all levels and sectors, the public, and art lovers have all together steadfastly and devotedly preserved and created conditions for this traditional art form to live forever.

Mr. Le Van Bai emphasized: "We have the right to be proud that the three regions of Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, and Ben Tre are all places with a tradition of national theatrical art, giving birth to many generations of composers, famous musicians, famous singers, artists... contributing to the glory of our country's national theater."

In the past, Vinh Long had composer Tong Huu Dinh (teacher Pho Muoi Hai), composer Truong Duy Toan, People's Artist Ut Tra On (known as "king of vọng cổ"), People's Artist Le Thuy (known as "extraordinary actress"), People's Artist Thanh Ton (both a prestigious artist and composer with many good plays), People's Artist Thanh Loc, People's Artist Thanh Loan, People's Artist Truong Xuan...

Ben Tre has People's Artist Le Long Van (Ba Van), artist Nguyen Thanh Chau (Nam Chau), playwright Dang Cong Danh, playwright Doan Van Do, Huynh Thu Trung, Tran Cong Ngu, director Tran Thanh Hung, artist Lu Phong, Lu Anh...

Besides, musician Hong Tan Phat made famous the traditional music of Tra Vinh. Composer- People's Artist Vien Chau- famous musician Bay Ba is considered the king of vọng cổ; famous musician Nam Co, composer Thanh Lam with the series of cải lương plays "Nghia tinh trong gio ton", "Co hong tren dinh Thuy"... reflected the increasingly rising revolutionary movement, attacking from the countryside, liberating the capital of the national liberation revolutionary movement in Tra Vinh...

Khmer du ke stage has Thach Chan, Thach Set, Thach Sung, Thach Thi Ha, Thach Thi Thane... Meritorious Artist Thach Chan left his mark with the stage "Bo Pha-Rang Xay Love" (early 80s), which spoke of the loyal solidarity of the Kinh-Khmer people and the pure international spirit of helping friends in Kampong Speu province.

During the resistance war against the US to save the country, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre established many reformed opera troupes at the provincial and district levels. All the playwrights and stage artists fulfilled their mission as soldiers on the ideological and cultural front, ready to take the lead in propaganda work and serve the people's arts.

There was a time when "singing drowned out the sound of bombs", effectively serving the cause of national liberation, motivating people, cadres and soldiers to overcome sacrifices and hardships, contributing to the cause of national construction.

Preserving and promoting folk art

Currently, Vinh Long province has more than 900 artists in various fields. The theater industry alone has 146 members who compose, direct, perform... with two main types of theater: Cai Luong theater and Khmer folk theater.

Of these, 35 are members of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association, including 1 People's Artist, 9 Meritorious Artists, 29 Meritorious Artists, and 3 Khmer traditional musical instrument artisans.

The Literature and Arts Association is a common home that has gathered and united generations of people working in the arts of amateur singing, traditional opera, vọng cổ, and cải lương; always continuing the traditions of their predecessors, through activities such as: opening training classes, creative camps, creative field trips, etc.

Many good works have been awarded high prizes in professional stage competitions and performances, contributing positively to encouraging and motivating artists in the stage field to strive to create with passion for the profession.

Many famous writers and artists have contributed to the development of the national stage and are admired by the public.

Meritorious Artist Vu Linh Tam shared: “Despite the ups and downs, the artists still shine steadfastly. We believe that in the coming time, artists and the Vinh Long stage will unite to fly higher, with more good works. Nurturing a force of young talents with the energy to compose well, perform well, and join the flow of friends everywhere to preserve and promote the sustainable value of Vietnamese theater literature and art, enhancing the value of the province's cultural and artistic heritage.”

According to Mr. Le Van Bai, in the coming time, artists in the theater field will continue to unite and work seriously in art, creating more theater works with valuable content, ideology and art.
