Satwiksairaj Rankireddy set the world record for the most powerful shot, hitting a speed of 565 km/h. The Indian badminton player broke the previous record of 493 km/h set by Malaysian former world number one Tan Boon Heong in May 2013.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Pearly Tan set the women's record at 438 km/h. She is also the first woman to hold a Guinness World Record in this category.

Rankireddy, born in 2000, 1m84 tall, right-handed, and Chirag Shetty are the only Indian men's doubles pair to win the BWF World Tour 1000. This pair was once in the top 10 of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) men's doubles rankings, with their highest career position being second.

Tan was born in 2000 and won gold medals in women's doubles and mixed team events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games .

Rankireddy and Tan both set the record under controlled conditions at the Yonex Tokyo Factory in Soka, Saitama, Japan on April 14, 2023. But it was not until August 2 that Guinness World Records confirmed and awarded the record certificates to the two athletes.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the measurement method is the moment of impact recorded by a high-speed camera, with the instantaneous velocity of the ball after impact calculated from the photographic record. The calculation method is the distance traveled and the time the ball has flown between two coordinates.

Instantaneous velocity is calculated based on distance, time and velocity measurements, while the change in the ball's flight speed is shown graphically.

To put Rankireddy's record-breaking shot into perspective, the fastest speed ever recorded by an F1 car is 240 mph, the fastest tennis serve is 163 mph, the fastest golf shot is 211 mph, and the fastest soccer kick is 80 mph.
