The man who cost Bolt the Olympic gold medal now lives in an Airbnb villa

Once causing Usain Bolt to lose his historic "Olympic treble" due to doping, Nesta Carter has now left the track to make a living with a side job.

Usain Bolt once stood on top of the world with the legendary “triple triple” achievement - winning 3 consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. However, that great milestone was tarnished when his teammate Nesta Carter was caught doping, causing Bolt and his teammates to be stripped of their 4x100m relay gold medal at Beijing 2008.

Now, as they both turn 39, Carter’s life path has taken a different turn. After officially retiring in 2021 amid a scandal over a repeat drug violation, the former Jamaican athlete quietly stepped away from the spotlight. Instead of speeding on the track, Carter now makes a living from real estate. He owns “Carter’s Nest Villa” – a luxury villa in the capital Kingston, advertised on Airbnb for between £150 and £300 a night, complete with high-end amenities.

Looking back on his career, Carter, along with Michael Frater, Asafa Powell and Bolt, set the 4x100m world record in Beijing. But that joy was dashed nine years later when Carter tested positive for methylhexaneamine. Despite appeals, he was found guilty, meaning Bolt lost a piece of his Olympic legacy.

It is worth noting that Bolt, despite being stripped of his gold medal, remained calm when talking about Carter. “I’m not angry. It happens in life. I achieved my personal goals and that’s the important thing,” the track and field legend told CNN. Bolt also admitted that if the incident had happened before Rio 2016, he would have been more troubled, but that completing the “Olympic treble” in time helped him feel relieved.

While Bolt remains a global icon, Carter – who opened the relay in 2008 – now lives a simple life, attached to a villa named after him. Two fates, two contrasting legacies, but together they add a memorable slice of Jamaican athletics history.
