Emergency handling of slope landslide during construction of North-South Expressway

On October 22, Project Management Board 85 - Ministry of Construction (investor of Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh Expressway project) fixed the problem of slope landslide in Tuy An Bac commune (Dak Lak province) due to prolonged rain. Both short-term and long-term solutions were implemented to ensure the safety of households living near this area.

According to VNA reporters, this landslide area has 4 households living, including 1 house raising swiftlets. The landslide affected the back of the house, the kitchen area, the toilet... The construction unit, Thang Long Corporation - JSC, has arranged excavators, diggers and workers to handle the landslide. In the short term, the slope roof has been created with drainage ditches and covered with tarpaulin to limit landslides into people's houses. In the long term, the construction unit will construct a rock gabion wall to ensure safety during the rainy season.

Mr. Nguyen Van Doan - Deputy Commander of Thang Long Corporation said that the landslide location is at pier M1 of Km66+318 bridge in Long Binh village, Tuy An Bac commune. Immediately after the incident occurred, the contractor focused on clearing the rocks and soil, not damaging people's property. When the local government handed over the site according to the landmark, the construction unit will build a stone gabion wall with a length of 120m, a height of 2m, and about 300 stone gabions for the entire route. When the construction is completed, this wall will overcome the maximum landslide...

During the rainy season, to ensure safety when constructing North-South Expressway component projects through the area, the Department of Construction of Dak Lak province requires investors and construction units to coordinate with local authorities to set up 24/7 rapid response teams in areas at risk of landslides. Contractors mobilize maximum human resources and machinery to dig, excavate, transport soil and rocks, dredge drainage ditches, temporary ditches, reinforce slopes, and place rock/concrete stream ditches at vulnerable points. In addition, construction units must fully arrange temporary traffic safety warning systems, traffic guides, and absolutely not allow people to travel in areas at risk of landslides that have not been reinforced.

Previously, heavy rains on October 15-16 caused some slopes of the Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh expressway project to slide. Households in Long Binh village, Tuy An Bac commune, Dak Lak province were directly affected when mud and soil flooded into their houses (no human casualties). Along with that, some roads in this area were covered with soil and rocks, obstructing traffic.
