A top NATO military official warned on September 16 that soaring ammunition prices mean more defense spending but that this does not translate into more effective security solutions, calling for a new approach to defense cooperation.

“The cost of equipment and ammunition is skyrocketing,” NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Rob Bauer said after the meeting in Oslo. “We are now paying more and more for the same ammunition. That means we cannot guarantee that increased defense spending will actually lead to better security.”

In addition, Mr. Bauer also promoted a new approach to public-private cooperation in the defense sector to increase production capacity.

“Long-term stability must take precedence over short-term gains. As we have seen in Ukraine, conflict is a whole-of-society event. Therefore, preventing conflict through resilience and deterrence must also be a whole-of-society task,” the chairman of the NATO Military Committee said.

In recent times, as allies have not only increased arms supplies to Kiev but also increased their own arms reserves, NATO has requested increased production to meet the demand for weapons and military equipment, which has skyrocketed since Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.

A major concern is a shortage of 155mm artillery shells, of which Kiev fires up to 10,000 a day. In February, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned that Kiev was burning through shells much faster than the West could produce them.
