Working overnight to reattach a child's severed finger

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/10/2024

Taking the patient's medical history, Ms. D.TT (the patient's mother) said the incident happened when D. was playing with friends near her house. The children secretly used a knife to cut a jackfruit but accidentally caused an accident, causing D. to lose three fingers on her left hand.

Baby D's family only found the 4th finger and quickly took him to the local hospital to stop the bleeding, then transferred him to Children's Hospital 2 for treatment.

Immediately upon admission, specialist doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Nga, Deputy Head of the Burn and Orthopedics Department, Children's Hospital 2, and colleagues performed overnight microsurgical suturing surgery for the patient.

On October 9, Dr. Nga said that these were complicated wounds, mostly due to children's carelessness during daily activities. In this case, the patient was an older child, the cut surface was clear and the severed finger was carefully preserved, thanks to which, after more than 3 hours, the surgical team successfully sutured the wound.

Children's wounds are treated and their fingers are sutured.

It is necessary to properly handle and preserve parts that are severed in an accident.

The sequelae of wounds need to be paid attention to. Most of the wounds are on the hands and feet of children, with the function of grasping and moving frequently. Fortunately, compared to adults, children's recovery ability is better. Successful suturing will help restore new circulation, restore function, avoid contraction, infection, and avoid sequelae. However, this depends a lot on the scale and condition of the wound. Timely treatment of wounds as soon as an incident occurs will serve the treatment well.

Doctor Nga recommends that in case of an accident, priority should be given to stopping the bleeding with a bandage or using a clean towel or cloth to wrap it and then go to the nearest medical facility. Severed parts should be preserved to avoid infection and preserved as soon as possible. If there is suspicion of an accident affecting the bones, a splint should be used during the movement.
