3 reservoirs simultaneously discharge floodwaters, Hanoi directs focused response

Three large hydroelectric reservoirs in the North are simultaneously releasing floodwaters.

Pursuant to Official Dispatch No. 5605/CD-BNN-DD dated August 2, 2024 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Son La Hydropower Company opens the third bottom spillway gate of Son La Hydropower Reservoir at 4:00 p.m. on August 2, 2024; Tuyen Quang Hydropower Company opens the second bottom spillway gate of Tuyen Quang Hydropower Reservoir at 3:00 p.m. on August 2, 2024 and opens the third bottom spillway gate at 5:00 p.m. on August 2, 2024.

Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also sent a telegram requesting the Hoa Binh, Son La, and Tuyen Quang Hydropower Companies to open many bottom spillway gates at 12 noon today (August 2). This causes the water level on the Red River - Thai Binh River system to continue to rise in the coming hours.

To ensure downstream safety when operating the Hoa Binh, Son La, and Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoirs, on the afternoon of August 2, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control, and Search and Rescue of Hanoi City sent an official dispatch to the People's Committees of districts, towns, and cities to focus on implementing solutions to ensure safety.

Accordingly, localities need to immediately notify authorities at all levels, people, organizations operating on rivers, along rivers, aquaculture facilities, water transport vehicles, construction works, production, business and sand mining establishments, and ferry terminals about flood discharge information from Son La and Tuyen Quang hydropower reservoirs to proactively take preventive measures to ensure safety of people and property.

The Hanoi Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue also requested localities to continue to strictly implement the direction in Document No. 54/BCH dated June 13, 2024 on ensuring safety downstream when releasing floodwaters from hydroelectric reservoirs. Organize a strict on-duty team, monitor, synthesize and promptly report to the Steering Committee Office according to regulations.
