These are numbers showing that TikTok in particular and the forms of livestreaming to sell books and short videos on BookTok and YouTube are exploding, shared at the national scientific conference on the topic " Orientation for the development of Vietnamese publishing in the digital age " , taking place on the afternoon of October 10 in Hanoi , an activity to celebrate the Traditional Day of the Vietnamese publishing, printing and book distribution industry.
6 months of book sales revenue on TikTok platform reached 600 billion VND
At the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Trong Lam - Director of the Truth National Political Publishing House - opened the topic of interest at this workshop: digital transformation in Vietnamese publishing.
According to him, one of the highlights of the 2020 - 2024 period is the spread of digital transformation to the publishing and promotion of publications.
Previously, distribution mainly relied on the traditional bookstore system, but now publishers have expanded distribution channels through e-commerce platforms (Shopee, Tiki, Lazada) and social networking platforms (Facebook, TikTok, YouTube).
Mr. Lam emphasized the revenue story of e-books, audiobooks and book sales on the TikTok platform. He said that although it still accounts for a small proportion (less than 10% of the industry's total revenue), revenue from e-books and audiobooks increased by an average of 20-25% per year in the period 2020-2024.
And in just the first 6 months of 2024, book sales on the TikTok platform reached 600 billion VND. This shows the growing influence of social networking platforms on book publishing activities.
Colonel Pham Van Truong - Director of the People's Army Publishing House - said that the miracle of the book Red Rain, which had 81,000 copies published last year, not only "followed" the popularity of the movie of the same name, but also thanks to the joint publishing unit Vietnambook, which promoted strong communication on Facebook, TikTok, and promoted online sales points Shopee, Tiki...
A livestream selling books on TikTok earned 300 million VND
Also on the story of book sales on TikTok, Dr. Pham Thi Lien (Academy of Journalism and Communication) cited information that book sales on TikTok Shop in 2023 will exceed 500 billion VND.
This year, the highest revenue from livestream book sales on TikTok reached nearly 300 million VND with more than 2,000 books sold in just 3 hours.
Meanwhile, e-commerce platform Tiki sold over 1.9 million publications in 2023.
"Livestreaming book sales and short videos on BookTok, YouTube, TikTok are booming... Digital media and marketing have become important channels in publishing activities in Vietnam and have initially brought certain results," said Ms. Lien.
However, this activity still has some limitations, the biggest of which is the copyright issue. Pirated books, fake books, and pirated ebooks are still popular on social networks, websites, e-commerce platforms, and even through e-reader distribution channels.
The acts of digitalization, illegal sharing, and piracy using AI tools have increased the speed and scale of violations, causing direct damage to the revenue, rights of authors, and reputation of publishers, while creating an unhealthy competitive environment. Advertising for pirated and fake books is still widely deployed and difficult to control...

Mr. Vu Trong Lam said that thuviencoso.vn, operated by the Truth National Political Publishing House, has provided nearly 700 theoretical, political, and legal books for readers at home and abroad to read for free over the past few years.
By the end of 2024, the website had nearly 7 million visits and more than 1.2 million document downloads.
