According to the Henley Passport Index 2023, the Vietnamese passport is ranked 82nd with 55 countries and territories exempting visas or having simplified procedures such as getting visas at border gates, e-visas. Compared to the ranking in January this year, the Vietnamese passport increased 6 places, from 88th and increased 10 places compared to 2022. However, the number of countries and territories exempting visas for Vietnamese citizens is still 55.

Vietnam ranked 82nd out of 199 countries and territories in the world in the Hanley Passport Index 2023.

Specifically, visa-free destinations for Vietnamese citizens include Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste*.

Asia: Kazahkstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives*, Nepal*, Sri Lanka**, Taiwan (China)**, Tajikistan*.

Middle East region: Iran*, Kuwait*, Oman.

Oceania: Cook Islands, Marshall Islands*, Puerto Rico*, Micronesia, Niue, Samoa*, Tuvalu*.

Americas: Bolivia*, Chile, Ecuador, Panama, Suriname.

Caribbean region: Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, St. Lucia*, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Africa: Burundi*, Cape Verde*, Comoro Islands*, Djibouti*, Guinea-Bissau*, Madagascar*, Malawi*, Mauritania*, Mauritius*, Mozambique*, Namibia*, Rwanda*, Seychelles*, Sierra Leone*, Somalia*, Tanzania*, Togo*, Zambia*.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore's passport is the most "powerful" in the world according to the Henley Passport Index 2023, as its citizens can travel to 193 out of 227 destinations worldwide without a visa. Over the past decade, Singapore citizens have had 25 new visa-free destinations added.

Malaysian passport ranked 11th with 180 visa-free destinations; Brunei ranked 20th (166); Thailand ranked 64th (79); Indonesia ranked 69th (73); Philippines ranked 74th (66)…

For five years running, Japan has held the No. 1 spot in the Henley Passport Index, which measures global travel freedom based on the level of visa-free access its citizens enjoy. However, in the summer of 2023, Japan fell to third place.

The Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks 199 passports worldwide. The index is updated in real time throughout the year and as changes to visa policies come into effect.
