The 'nightmare' of having your phone tapped can come true

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên18/12/2023

Cox Media Group (CMG) is selling a product called "Active Listening" with the claim that their technology is useful for advertising campaigns based on what is heard from users' conversations, wherever they are, as long as there is a smart device within range. The company says it can capture the content of users' conversations through the microphone on smart devices, from which it can analyze and identify potential customers for many different types of products and services.

It's still unclear whether CMG is using this technology to eavesdrop on users, but it's likely that in just a short while, any product or service we mention will "suddenly" appear very accurately when accessing the internet.

Smart devices can be used to listen to conversations for the purpose of advertising products and services.

Ethical concerns aside, products like CMG's could help companies pinpoint exactly which users are most likely to be interested in their products, eliminating the traditional guesswork model. According to Phone Arena , it's not yet possible to verify whether CMG's technology actually works or is effective. Some reports suggest the company has sought out customers on the social network LinkedIn, and claims an impressive initial return on investment, meaning businesses are already buying and using the technology.

Active Listening users can choose the area they want the service to operate in, with coverage ranging from 10 miles to over 20 miles. The service uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect conversations of interest captured by the microphones of smartphones, smart TVs, and other smart devices.

CMG also installs a tracking program on clients’ websites to track return on investment. The ads are distributed through display, Google search, Bing, YouTube, and existing online services. The goal is to target ads to customers who are in need of the product, providing content so personalized that it makes customers feel like their minds have been read.

On CMG’s website, the company claims its services are legal. Currently, there is no way to detect CMG’s technology on Android phones. For iPhone users, whenever the microphone is active, an orange icon will light up on the sensor cluster on the screen to indicate it.
