Recently, there have been many fires involving electric vehicles across the country, causing serious damage. Through investigation, the main cause was determined to be an incident during the charging process, causing the battery to overheat and explode.
In Lang Son , up to now, there have been no recorded fires originating from electric vehicles. However, the increasing number of these vehicles makes the potential risk always present. According to statistics from the Traffic Police Department, Provincial Police, as of August 2025, the whole province had nearly 43,000 cars in circulation, of which electric vehicles accounted for about 17%. Along with that, there were more than 30,000 electric motorbikes registered for use. Since the beginning of 2025, there have been 260 new electric cars and nearly 600 electric motorbikes registered.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Tuong, Deputy Head of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (PCCC and CNCH), Provincial Police said: The common cause of electric vehicle fires comes from people not understanding the process of using and maintaining electric vehicles. In order to save costs, there are also cases where people buy batteries, accumulators, and components that are floating, of unknown origin or have been repaired, or have changed the manufacturer's technical specifications. These types of batteries are not safe, easily swell, overheat, and explode when charging.
In addition, the habit of charging for too long, charging while the battery is still hot, leaving the vehicle in high temperature places, near flammable materials... also increases the risk of fire and explosion. Some external factors such as wet sockets, damaged wires, mouse bites, impact causing loss of insulation, unsafe soldering and connections... can all lead to accidents.
To prevent the risk of fire and explosion, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department has stepped up propaganda, guidance, and recommendations for people, especially those who regularly use electric vehicles. The unit has created easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember media publications, posted on the department's electronic information portal as well as the fanpage system of the police of communes and wards.
In reality, students are the common users of electric vehicles. Therefore, the authorities have proactively coordinated with schools to include instructions on safe use of electric vehicles in extracurricular activities at the beginning of the school year. Since the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, more than 400 legal propaganda sessions on traffic safety and safe use of electric vehicles for students have been carried out. Here, students are instructed on how to choose a vehicle, charge it according to standards, use a suitable power source, preserve the battery, check safety during charging and handle incidents...
Student Hua Quynh Anh, grade 7, Hoang Van Thu Secondary School (Ky Lua Ward) shared: Thanks to the instructions, I know how to charge the battery safely, such as waiting for the battery to cool down before charging, not charging overnight, always turning off the power before charging, and choosing a dry, cool place. That knowledge helps me feel more confident and secure when using an electric vehicle.
Ms. Nong Thi Thai, village 4, Dinh Lap commune said: When I read the information about the fire and explosion cases related to electric vehicles, I was quite worried. However, after reading the recommendations of the authorities, I chose to buy vehicles from reputable brands with quality inspection for my children to go to school. At the same time, I also carefully researched and instructed my children to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
From 2024 to present, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department has organized 43 propaganda sessions on fire prevention and rescue knowledge and skills at schools in the province with the participation of over 30,500 students and teachers. The unit also distributed more than 15,000 leaflets and 2,000 key chains with emergency phone numbers in case of fire or explosion (114). In addition, the Commune Police also actively integrated propaganda and instructed people and students on fire prevention and fighting for electric vehicles. Thereby, contributing to spreading knowledge of fire prevention and fighting to a large number of people.
