Apple renamed Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America for US users

On February 12, Apple changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users of the Apple Maps application in the US, following an executive order by President Donald Trump.

According to AFP, users of the Apple Maps application in the US will see the name American Gulf, while users outside the US will still see the name Gulf of Mexico as before.

Apple's decision came after Google officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for Google Maps users in this North American country on February 10 (US time).

"People using Google Maps in the US will see the name Gulf of America, while people in Mexico will see 'Gulf of Mexico.' Everyone else will see both names," Google announced.

Google said the change is consistent with its policy of following official US government geographic designations, through the US Geographic Information System (GNIS).

Shortly after taking office, Mr. Trump signed executive orders that not only renamed the Gulf of Mexico but also restored the name McKinley to Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America.

This move by the US leader has raised diplomatic concerns with Mexico.

Following Google's move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the country's government would write to Google to protest the name change.

AP News Agency Banned From Reporting In Oval Office For Not Using The Word 'American Gulf'

In a related development, the AP news agency reported on February 11 that its reporters were banned from attending an event in the Oval Office because they continued to use the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America.”

“We have been informed by the White House that if AP does not adjust its editorial standards in accordance with President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, AP will be banned from Oval Office events,” AP Editor-in-Chief Julie Pace said.

The news agency called it an “alarming” move by the Trump administration to punish AP for its independent journalism.
