Avdiivka remains a hot spot, will Washington increase aid to Kiev?

Two civilians were killed and another injured in attacks on Avdiivka, the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine said on October 15. Russia continued shelling the town for a fifth consecutive day, making it impossible for rescue teams to retrieve the dead from the rubble of buildings.

Kharkiv region governor Oleh Sinehubov said a 54-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man were killed and a woman was injured in the overnight Russian airstrike.

For its part, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said its forces repelled 15 Russian attacks near Avdiivka, Tonenke and Pervomaiske in Donetsk, while Russian forces carried out heavy airstrikes in the area.

Earlier, in an interview with the media on the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized: “As for the counterattack, which is said to be stalled - it has completely failed. However, we know that in some conflict areas, the enemy is preparing new offensive operations. We know that. We are also preparing a corresponding response.”

According to President Putin, the Russian military is currently improving its positions almost throughout the entire conflict zone. These actions can be described as active defense with improved positions in a number of areas, including Kupyansk, Zaporizhzhia and Avdiivka.

In related news, speaking in an interview on CBS 's "Face the Nation" program (USA) on October 15, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the new arms package for Israel and Ukraine will be significantly higher than 2 billion USD. He said that US President Joe Biden will have in-depth discussions with Congress this week about the need to pass the new aid package mentioned above.
