Difficult beginning, step by step growth
The image of a communications soldier with a roll of wire on his shoulder and a machine on his back, wading through falling bombs and exploding bullets to connect the line is one of the symbols of revolutionary heroism in combat of the Communications Corps. Hero of the People's Armed Forces Tran Duy Hoan, a soldier of Group 29, Platoon 1, Company 5, Regiment 134 (now Brigade 134), on June 20, 1972, used his teeth to bite the two ends of a broken wire in the middle of a bomb site on the Long Dai ferry, the most fiercely fought point on the Truong Son road, to connect the line, despite the electric shock that numbed his body.
After 80 years of building and fighting, the Signal Corps has gradually matured and developed remarkably in terms of organization, technical means and methods of organization to ensure combat operations. The Corps has built a widely developed communication network, closely combining radio, wire, military post, and other forms of people's information, ensuring communication for the leadership and command of the Party Central Committee, the Central Military Commission and the General Command. The Signal Corps has contributed greatly to the victory of the resistance war against French colonialism and American imperialism and the two wars to defend the Fatherland in the Southwestern and Northern borders, contributing to firmly protecting the country's territorial sovereignty .
After the complete Liberation of the South (April 30, 1975), the Corps quickly shifted to building a national defense information system, gradually modernizing communication equipment and weapons in military regions, army corps, services, and arms.
Go straight to modern
The Resolutions of the 11th, 12th, and 13th National Party Congresses and the Resolutions of the 9th, 10th, and 11th National Party Congresses of the Army determined that the Signal Corps is the force that is given priority to advance straight to modernity. Accordingly, the task of building the Army and protecting the Fatherland has taken a new step forward, the extremely strong development of science and technology has been creating a breakthrough in the field of military information.
Communications have become the fundamental technological infrastructure for the automated command and control system of high-tech weapons and for electronic warfare and cyber warfare; the foundation for administrative reform, digital transformation, and building e-Government in the Army...
According to the report, the Corps has proactively developed and proposed to the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense to issue the "Strategy for developing the Military Communications System for the 2011-2020 period" and the "Strategy for developing the Military Communications System for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045".
Up to now, the Military Communication system has developed rapidly, synchronously, with quality and modernity at all three levels: strategy, campaign, tactics, both fixed information and mobile information, especially in terms of scale, technology, assurance methods and service quality; stability, solidity of the system, giving priority to forces tasked with protecting border and island sovereignty, forces advancing straight to modernity, special forces; serving important political events of the country, drills of the Ministry and the entire army, tasks of natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue, tasks of scientific development, innovation and digital transformation in the Army and defense foreign affairs tasks.
During the days when the Signal Corps was enthusiastically competing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its traditional day (September 9, 1945 - September 9, 2025), we visited Battalion 76, Brigade 205, the unit whose function is the information center, directly ensuring communication for the Ministry of National Defense Command and the Army units in the capital Hanoi. In all the professional rooms, the on-duty atmosphere was serious, only occasionally hearing the phone ringing, the conversation of the soldiers on duty.
Major Do Xuan Anh, Battalion Commander, said that the Battalion is gradually modernizing both equipment and human resources. The information equipment has been reduced to a compact circuit board instead of two bulky cabinets. Officers and employees are all aware of improving their level of exploitation, use, and learning the operating principles of the equipment, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of the equipment. Professional military major Nguyen Thi Thao, an employee of the Optical Cable Station, said that they can comprehensively manage, quickly detect, and coordinate with technical forces to fix information problems on the military transmission system. Professional military major Pham Thi Xoan, an employee of the Radio Station, with 28 years of military experience, has achieved the level of a "master" in reporting with a transmission speed of 170 characters/minute. She confided that she and her teammates are clearly aware of their responsibilities in each shift, "on duty is in combat position".
In each step of growth, the Information and Communications Corps has always been regularly cared for and educated by the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of National Defense. That is a great source of encouragement for today's generation of information officers and soldiers to continue to promote the tradition of the heroic Information and Communications Corps, "Brave, agile, overcoming difficulties, maintaining information and communications, ensuring good combat and common work", determined to successfully implement the "Strategy for developing the Military Information and Communications System for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2045", building a "revolutionary, disciplined, elite, modern" Corps, excellently completing all assigned tasks, worthy of being a loyal and trustworthy political and combat force of the Party, the State, and the people in the cause of building and defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and firmly stepping into the new era with the country.
With great contributions and outstanding achievements, the Signal Corps was honored to receive many noble awards from the Party, State and Army: Twice recognized as a Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces (1976, 2010); Gold Star Medal (2005); two Ho Chi Minh Medals (1979 and 2025); First-class Independence Medal (2015), third-class (2000); three Military Exploit Medals (first, second, third); nine Feat of Arms Medals (first, second, third); Second-class Fatherland Protection Medal (2020); awarded the Angkor Medal by the Cambodian State... The Signal Corps has 69 collectives and 37 individuals honored by the Party and State with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
