Quang Ngai: 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Mang But commune damages school

The facilities of Mang But 2 Ethnic Boarding School (Mang But Commune, Quang Ngai Province) were damaged by the effects of consecutive earthquakes that occurred on the evening of October 5 and early morning of October 6.

Specifically, the earthquake shook the principal's building, which has 1 kindergarten class with 36 students and 1 computer room (including 28 computers serving teaching activities for 100 elementary school students), the tiled roof on the 2nd floor was completely damaged; 4 dormitories for 60 boarding students had cracked wall structures; the tiled roofs behind 5 dormitories for teachers had signs of displacement and broken roof structures.

At Dak Chun school, there are 2 structural cracks between the walls and columns; at Dak Lanh school, 2 classrooms also have structural cracks in the surrounding walls.

The roof tiles at the back of the 5 teachers' rooms are showing signs of displacement and structural failure.

According to Nguyen Van Duc, Principal of Mang But 2 Ethnic Boarding School for Primary and Secondary Students, after checking the damage to school facilities caused by the earthquake, the school has come up with a temporary solution.

Accordingly, for boarding student rooms, 30 students will be arranged to stay in 1 classroom (currently used as an art classroom); 30 students will stay in the reading room.

For the computer room (28 computers), temporarily stop teaching IT subjects, remove the entire computer system to ensure safety when the roof tile system is damaged.

"To ensure safety for teaching and learning activities of boarding students, Mang But 2 Ethnic Boarding School for Primary and Secondary Students requests the People's Committee of Mang But Commune to urgently conduct a field survey and have a plan to promptly fix and repair the situation," said Nguyen Van Duc, Principal of Mang But 2 Ethnic Boarding School for Primary and Secondary Students.

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences , Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), in the early morning of October 6, consecutive earthquakes occurred in Mang But commune, Quang Ngai province.

Specifically, at 1:28:42 ( Hanoi time) on October 6, in Mang But commune, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred, with a focal depth of about 8.1km. Disaster risk warning level 1.

In addition, at 0:41, 1:00 and 1:46 on October 6, three earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 2.9 occurred in Mang But commune. The natural disaster risk level is 0.

Previously, from approximately 6:58 p.m. to 11:56 p.m. on October 5, 10 consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.3 occurred in Mang But commune. Among them, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.3 occurred at 6:55 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on October 5. The remaining earthquakes ranged from 2.5 to 3.6.

Thus, from the evening of October 5 to 1:46 a.m. on October 6, 14 consecutive earthquakes occurred in Mang But commune.
