The first successful core biopsy technique under the guidance of bronchoscopy and ultrasound

Ultrasonic bronchoscopy technique helps to obtain tissue pieces that are more structurally intact, thereby increasing the ability to diagnose histopathology, immunology and molecular biology, especially meaningful in malignant diseases such as lung cancer.

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) as well as transbronchial ultrasound-guided aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) are no longer new topics for respiratory physicians in Vietnam. However, performing various procedures via EBUS requires doctors who have been properly trained and proficient in the procedure.

108 Military Central Hospital, with the support of Japanese experts, doctors of the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine in collaboration with the Vietnam-Japan Medical Center and the International Department have marked an important step forward in the field of diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases when, for the first time in Vietnam, successfully performed core biopsy technique under the guidance of endobronchial ultrasound - EBUS-IFB (Endobronchial Ultrasound-Internordal Forceps Biopsy) for a patient with abnormal lymph nodes in the hilum and mediastinum.

EBUS-IFB technique is a new improvement of ultrasound bronchoscopy (EBUS). Compared with the traditional EBUS-TBNA technique that only performs aspiration and obtains cellular specimens, EBUS-IFB helps obtain tissue fragments that are more structurally intact, thereby increasing the ability to diagnose histopathology, immunology and molecular biology, especially in malignant diseases such as lung cancer. EBUS-IFB has truly been a breakthrough in biopsy of mediastinal and hilar lesions, replacing traditional mediastinoscopy.

The EBUS-IFB technique was successfully performed with the support of Japanese experts and the coordination of the team of doctors and nurses of the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine and related agencies and units, demonstrating the expertise and pioneering spirit of the medical team of the 108 Military Central Hospital in general and the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine in particular in conquering the pinnacles of medicine.

At the same time, this first case marks a new development step of Vietnam's respiratory endoscopy technique as assessed by Japanese experts. This event is not only the pride of the Department of Respiratory Medicine and the hospital, but also opens a new direction, creating the premise for the widespread application of EBUS-IFB technique in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary-mediastinal diseases in Vietnam.

The successful implementation of EBUS-IFB technique has affirmed the hospital's pioneering role in the field of interventional bronchoscopy, contributing to improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment for patients.

In the coming time, the Department of Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine aims to continue developing advanced endoscopic techniques to provide the most accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for patients.
