Alarm over pickpocketing at graduation ceremonies, university warns

Nguyen Vuong Nhu Quynh, a student at Hoa Sen University, posted on the school's student forum that she had lost her belongings while attending the graduation ceremony on the morning of February 24 at the Hoa Binh Theater. Accordingly, Quynh lost a black handbag containing her wallet, identification papers, and personal belongings in the parking lot area, below the Hoa Binh Theater.

Other information also said that a parent had his pocket pickpocketed and lost more than 7 million VND and a student had his phone stolen on February 24.

Graduation ceremonies often attract thousands of students and parents, making them an opportunity for criminals to infiltrate.

Discussing this issue, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Huong, Deputy Director of the Center for Communication and Student Employment Experience at Hoa Sen University, said that crowded venues are often warned to have criminals mixed in.

"For many years, the school has held graduation ceremonies here. Every time, representatives of the Hoa Binh Theater remind the school to inform all students and parents about being wary of thieves. Therefore, before the event takes place, in many emails, the school always informs parents and students to be careful with their belongings when attending the graduation ceremony, to avoid forgetting things or having them stolen," Ms. Huong informed.

"At the same time, right before the event, the theater's loudspeakers continuously reminded everyone to be vigilant. The school and theater also sent additional staff to coordinate throughout the event, as well as regularly reminding parents and students, but sometimes losses were still unavoidable," Ms. Huong shared.

According to Ms. Huong, security at the Hoa Binh Theater is very strict. Anyone who wants to enter the hall area must have a card and there are two guards standing at the door to control entry and exit. The school also assigned people to coordinate with the guards to ensure security.

"Thefts usually happen outside the hall. Thieves are very professional, they can take advantage of crowded places such as the check-in area, the gate, the theater yard, dress politely and act quickly so that no one can detect them," Ms. Huong said.

Schools regularly remind and warn parents and students, but pickpocketing at events such as graduation ceremonies still occurs.

Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the Information and Communication Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, also said: "When organizing graduation ceremonies at large venues such as the Hoa Binh Theater or other similar venues, security is always a factor that is focused on. It is necessary to strengthen security forces from many sides, from the school, from the theater and report to local security."

However, Master Ngoc said that because of the large number of people and the mixed in of thieves, it is difficult to avoid cases of loss at the graduation ceremonies of some schools.

"Every time we prepare for a graduation ceremony, especially at large venues, the school always reminds students very carefully, from walking, taking photos, parking... to being highly vigilant. The school also increases the number of internal collaborators to ensure the event goes smoothly," Ms. Bich Ngoc added.

A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology also shared that theft at graduation ceremonies in large-scale venues is a common situation at many schools.

"When holding graduation ceremonies at Hoa Binh Theater, the school always informs and reminds parents and students to be vigilant. In previous events, we heard students report theft. Therefore, recently the school has increased security," said the representative.

Specifically, the school has arranged a team of experts from the faculties and collaborators to remind students and parents and continuously broadcast announcements to everyone to be careful when taking pictures outside. In addition, the school has invited local police and coordinated with the theater to come up with a support plan.
