On July 31, news from Vinmec Can Tho International General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just successfully operated on a 15-year-old girl with a "huge" ovarian tumor.

Previously, the child was taken to Vinmec Can Tho International General Hospital with increasingly severe abdominal pain, poor appetite, no fever, iron deficiency anemia and pain localized in the left lower abdomen, suspected of ovarian torsion.

Paraclinical examination results showed an abnormally large cyst, occupying almost the entire abdomen, measuring up to 25 cm, equivalent to a 7-month fetus.

According to doctors, this is a complicated case because the patient is very young, has a high BMI, and is at risk of tumor torsion leading to ovarian necrosis, which can cause complete loss of fertility later on.

After interdisciplinary consultation and detailed discussion with the family, the doctors decided to perform emergency surgery. For more than an hour, the team of obstetricians, gynecologists, anesthesiologists and emergency resuscitators worked closely together to carefully remove the tumor. The surgery was successful, controlling bleeding well, retaining healthy tissue and preserving ovarian function.

The patient recovered quickly, ate normally again and was discharged after 4 days of treatment.

Specialist Doctor 2 Uong Thi Kim Ngoc, obstetrician and gynecologist of Vinmec Can Tho Hospital, said that with ovarian diseases in adolescents, the decisive factor is not only surgical technique, but also understanding the psychology and reproductive future of the child.

Doctors warn that many young people often ignore or mistake lower abdominal pain for menstrual cramps, leading to delays in diagnosis. Meanwhile, ovarian tumors, if not detected and treated promptly, can grow large, compress nearby organs, or twist or rupture, seriously affecting health and the ability to become a mother in the future.
